What can we do to help end child labor around the world?

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

Well, the change has to start within each one of us, and that ends when all children are free to be children. There is honestly no clear, global definition of child labor. In one book "Living as a Child Laborer has made this distinction: Child Labor is “work that is mentally, physically, socially, or morally dangerous and harmful to children or interferes with their education. It is work, therefore, that deprives children of their childhood, their potential, and their dignity.”

Hope that helps ( A very strong subject for me:)

Answer the following questions with a minimum of three complete sentences. Include evidence from the text to support your answers.

1: In Donne's poem "no man is a island', the speaker explains the inerconnectedness of all humankind. What does it mean for elie to be part of a collective identity?

2: In what ways does Elie's community in sighet function as a collective?

3: Use examples from the book night and "no man is an island" to discuss the advantages of having a collective voice.

4: Use examples from the book night and "no man is an island" to discuss the the disadvantages of having a collective voice.

Answers

1. According to Donne's poem, "No man is an island," the speaker argues that no individual is entirely self-sufficient, and everyone relies on others in their lives. Elie, as part of a collective identity, means that he is not alone and has the support of others. In the book Night, Eliezer experienced an immense feeling of loneliness in the concentration camps, and the lack of a collective identity led him to feel isolated. Being a part of a collective identity means that individuals have a shared purpose and are not alone in their struggles.

2. Elie's community in Sighet functions as a collective in several ways. Firstly, they share common traditions and beliefs, such as their religion and their sense of belonging to the Jewish community. Secondly, they work together to support each other, especially during times of hardship, as seen when they gather to pray at the synagogue. Finally, the community shares a sense of responsibility for each other, such as when they provide support to those who are struggling to find food or shelter.

3. The collective voice can have several advantages, as seen in both Night and "No man is an island." For example, a collective voice can provide a sense of solidarity, and a shared sense of purpose that can help individuals cope with difficult situations. This is seen when Eliezer's father becomes ill, and the other prisoners rally around him, providing emotional and practical support. Additionally, a collective voice can help individuals effect change, as seen in the poem, where Donne argues that the actions of one individual can have far-reaching consequences for others.

4. However, there are also disadvantages to having a collective voice, as seen in both Night and "No man is an island." For example, the collective voice can suppress individuality, as seen in the concentration camps, where individuals were stripped of their identities and reduced to mere numbers. Additionally, a collective voice can lead to conformity and a lack of critical thinking, as individuals are more likely to follow the crowd, rather than question the status quo. Finally, a collective voice can lead to groupthink, where individuals prioritize the opinions of the group over their own beliefs, potentially leading to negative outcomes.

Why do you think it is important that Stella recites the Declaration of Independence for Mr. Pineville? Use evidence from the text to support your answer

Answers

I think it is important for Stella to recite the Declaration of Independence for Mr. Pineville because it showcases her intelligence, knowledge, and understanding of American history. This act also challenges Mr. Pineville's prejudiced belief that African Americans are inferior and uneducated.

In the text, Stella's father expresses concern about her reciting the Declaration of Independence to Mr. Pineville, saying, "You know that's asking for trouble." However, Stella is determined to prove herself and insists on reciting it.

When she does, Mr. Pineville is impressed and admits, "I never heard a colored child speak so well." This statement suggests that Mr. Pineville had a preconceived notion that African American children were not capable of reciting the Declaration of Independence.

Stella's recitation of the Declaration of Independence challenges Mr. Pineville's prejudice and proves that African Americans are just as intelligent and knowledgeable as anyone else.

This moment also serves as a symbolic act of resistance against the racism and discrimination that Stella and her community face. By reciting the Declaration of Independence, Stella is asserting her right to be recognized as an equal citizen of the United States.

What is asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous silicate mineral. There are six types, all of which are composed of long and thin fibrous crystals, each fibre being composed of many microscopic "fibrils" that can be released into the atmosphere by abrasion and other processes.

Inhalation of asbestos fibres can lead to various dangerous lung conditions, including mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer, so it is now notorious as a serious health and safety hazard. Asbestos is an excellent electrical insulator and is highly fire-resistant, so for much of the 20th century, it was very commonly used across the world as a building material until its adverse effects on human health were more widely acknowledged in the 1970s.

Many modern buildings constructed before the 1980s are thought to contain asbestos.

"The World on the Turtle's Back" is a creation myth. Based on the title and the genre, what can the reader expect to occur in the myth before reading? How can the reader confirm the prediction? Use details from the myth in your response

Answers

Answer:

For the first question: Based on the title and the genre, what can the reader expect to occur in the myth before reading? Answer to question: Readers will most likely expect to have a World or city on top of a turtle shell.

Explanation:

In the question, it says what might a reader expect. The title is a figure of speech, or a myth. Its a myth, but if it was a real thing, it would mean a pile of bugs or objects ontop of an ordinary turtles shell.

Based on the title and genre, we can assume that the story is about how people believe the world is created and how life began on earth. And with the title "The World on the Turtle's Back", it is most likely that the creation of the world began with a turtle playing an important role in the creation.

This can be confirmed by the lines-

"In the beginning, there was no world, no land, no creatures, . . . no men."

"The great sea turtle came . . . [and] floated about on the huge ocean with the woman safely on his back."

The creation myth "The World on the Turtle's Back" is an Iroquois myth that tells the story of how the world was created. It also delves into the issue of the complex nature of people and how such conflicts led to the present-day dilemmas of man.

On first reading the title and genre of the story, before reading the whole story, one can assume that the myth would be about how the world was created. The genre of it being a myth also contributes to the theme of it being an ancient story. And judging by the title, we can also assume that the story would involve a turtle one way or the other. These predictions are confirmed by certain lines in the myth where the speaker narrates the story. The statement "In the beginning, there was no world, no land, no creatures, . . . no men" shows how life was before and mostly points to the story's creation theme. Also, the revelation "The great sea turtle came . . . [and] floated about on the huge ocean with the woman safely on his back" reveals how the turtle was an important part of the safety and beginning of man's life on earth.

The Iroquois's belief of how the world began is seen in this creation myth. This provides us a sense of how they believe the world was created, and how the different natures of men led to present-day issues. This creation myth provides us with an insight into the Iroquois people's beliefs about creation.

Here is a sample letter to the editor of a newspaper expressing concerns about the wastage of resources during marriages and other ceremonies:

Letter to the Editor Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to express my concern about the increasing wastage of resources during marriages and other ceremonies. It is heart-wrenching to see that in the name of celebrations, people are wasting food, water, electricity, flowers, and other resources without any thought for the environment and future generations. As a responsible citizens, it is our duty to conserve natural resources and protect the environment from further degradation. At many weddings, huge quantities of food are prepared, but only a small fraction is consumed. The rest is thrown away, leading to an enormous waste of resources and contributing to food scarcity and hunger.

Similarly, large quantities of water and electricity are wasted during these ceremonies, adding to the burden on natural resources. Additionally, flowers and other decorations are thrown away after the ceremonies, which further adds to the waste and pollution. I urge the government and civil society to take measures to prevent this wastage of resources and encourage people to adopt eco-friendly practices during marriages and other ceremonies.

For example, one can minimize food wastage by planning the number of guests and food accordingly. People can use biodegradable materials and recycled products for decorations, which will reduce the burden on natural resources. Finally, I request the public to be more aware and conscious of the environment and its protection. We must realize that waste today can lead to a scarcity of resources for future generations. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that we leave behind a habitable and sustainable planet for our children and grandchildren. Thank you for your time.

4. Summarize Douglass' feelings upon arriving in New York in paragraph 7. How does Douglass use figurative language in this paragraph to convey his emotions? - The Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass: Excerpt from chapter 11.

Answers

Douglass arrived safely, but he was overcome with emotions since freedom was new to him after a life of servitude. He compared his mental condition to that of "one who has fled a den of ravenous lions."  His new experience in the Northern metropolis was both exciting and terrifying since he knew absolutely no one.

What is the summary of The Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass?

Frederick Douglass was enslaved as a child in 1817 or 1818. Like many slaves, he is unsure of his exact birth date. Douglass is removed from his mother, Harriet Bailey, shortly after his birth. Their white lord, Captain Anthony, is most probably his father. Captain Anthony serves as a clerk for Colonel Lloyd, a rich man. Lloyd has hundreds of slaves and calls his huge central farm the "Great House Farm."

Douglass' existence on the plantation is not as difficult as that of the majority of the other slaves. As a kid, he works in the home rather than in the fields. He is entrusted to Captain Anthony's son-in-law's brother, Hugh Auld, who resides in Baltimore when he is seven years old.

Following the deaths of Captain Anthony and his surviving heirs, Douglass is returned to serve Captain Anthony's son-in-law, Thomas Auld. Auld is a cruel man exacerbated by his faux religious devotion. Auld believes Douglass is uncontrollable, so he rents him to Edward Covey, a man infamous for "breaking" slaves, for a year.

After a year with Covey, Douglass is rented for two years to William Freeland. Despite the fact that Freeland is a gentler, kinder guy, Douglass' desire to flee is reignited. Douglass begins instructing his fellow slaves at Freeland's in a Sabbath school held in the houses of free blacks. Despite the danger of punishment and violence, many slaves from adjacent plantations come to Douglass and work hard to learn.

Douglass encounters fragile race relations in Baltimore's commercial business. White employees have been working alongside free black workers, but whites are becoming concerned that a growing number of free blacks may seize their employment.

Hugh Auld eventually grants Douglass permission to contract out his spare time. He saves all his money and ultimately escapes to New York. To safeguard the safety of future slaves who may try the trek, Douglass refrains from disclosing the circumstances of his escape.

The past, present, and future can all be expressed with modal verbs. The words "will" and "won't" convey the degree of certainty that is most certain, whereas "must" and "can't/couldn't," "should" and "shouldn't," "may" and "may not" express the degree of certainty that is least certain.

The modal verbs "must," "have to," and "have got to" indicate that something is required and not optional. The third modal verb, must, is most frequently used in literature since it is the strongest and most serious.

After patriots tore down the statue of King George III in New York City on July 9, 1776, they melted parts of it down and made bullets to use against the British. It is impossible to know the exact number of American colonists who favored or opposed independence. For years it was widely believed that one third favored the Revolution, one third opposed it, and one third were undecided. This stems from an estimate made by John Adams in his personal writings in 1815.Historians have since concluded that Adams was referring to American attitudes toward the French Revolution, not ours. The current thought is that about 20 percent of the colonists were LOYALISTS those whose remained loyal to England and King George. Another small group in terms of percentage were the dedicated PATRIOTS, for whom there was no alternative but independence.Thomas PaineIn "Common Sense," Thomas Paine argued for independence from Britain and the creation of a democratic republic. Its publication in January 1776 immediately added fuel to the patriots' cause.Even with military victory, it would have been impossible for the Crown to regain the allegiance of the people. Revolution would merely flare up at a later date. The British understood the need to attract American popular support for the parent country, as well. Some colonists who were not persuaded by the political struggle joined the British for personal gain or military glory. Some joined out of sheer loyalty to the Crown they still believed themselves loyal British citizens. There were also many American farmers willing to sell their goods to the British for profit. In the long run, however, the patriots were much more successful attracting support. American patriots won the war of propaganda. Committees of Correspondence persuaded many fence-sitters to join the patriot cause. Writings such as Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" stirred newfound American nationalism.Excerpt of "Common Sense"IN the following pages I offer nothing more than simple facts, plain arguments, and common sense: and have no other preliminaries to settle with the reader, than that he will divest himself of prejudice and prepossession, and suffer his reason and his feelings to determine for themselves that he will put on, or rather that he will not put off, the true character of a man, and generously enlarge his views beyond the present day ...The Sun never shined on a cause of greater worth. 'Tis not the affair of a City, a County, a Province, or a Kingdom; but of a Continent of at least one-eighth part of the habitable Globe. 'Tis not the concern of a day, a year, or an age; posterity are virtually involved in the contest, and will be more or less affected even to the end of time, by the proceedings now. Now is the seed-time of Continental union, faith and honour. The least fracture now will be like a name engraved with the point of a pin on the tender rind of a young oak; the wound would enlarge with the tree, and posterity read in it full grown characters. Thomas Paine, "Common Sense" (1776)William FranklinThe American Revolution not only separated neighbors and friends, it devastated many families, including the Franklins. William Franklin, pictured here, a Loyalist, rarely, if ever, spoke to his Patriot father Ben after the war.Patriots subjected Loyalists to public humiliation and violence. Many Loyalists found their property vandalized, looted, and burned. The patriots controlled public discourse. Woe to the citizen who publicly proclaimed sympathy to Britain.Families were sometimes divided over the revolution. Benjamin Franklin's son, William, a Loyalist governor of New Jersey, supported the British effort during the war. What Happened to the Loyalists? In the end, many Loyalists simply left America. About 80,000 of them fled to Canada or Britain during or just after the war. Because Loyalists were often wealthy, educated, older, and Anglican, the American social fabric was altered by their departure. American history brands them as traitors. But most were just trying to maintain the lifestyles to which they had become accustomed. After all, history is always written by the winners.
