He had a "escort" service that did exceptionally well and was conducted out of a trailer park in West Texas, there was a convenient tavern attached to mingle with women and also sold bootleg moonshine and whiskey. I once read a paper done by my grandma about her family during the depression and she quoted my Great-father as saying "we didn't even know people were broke, the whiskey flowed and the steaks were good."
But, less subjective and more objectively, the great depression was a major milestone in American History that taught us that nothing is guaranteed, you may be sitting pretty Monday and by Friday you could be homeless.
