Instructions: The Virtual Populations Lab is on the lesson assessment page. Gather data to evaluate Sebastian's Snorkel Spot's claim that a new factory is polluting the coral reef. Follow the instructions as you move through the lab and record your data and observations in the lab report.

Title: Sebastian’s snorkel spot

Objective(s): The objective is to watch the conditions in the coral reef to prove that the factory is polluting the reef.

Hypotheses:  If pollution levels increase, then the health of the coral reef with decrease. levels increase, then the health of the coral reef will

Variables:

Dependent- heath of the reef by water clarity, dissolved oxygen, live coral coverage, and stoplight parrot fish population.

Independent- the additional pollution and runoff from the factory

Procedure:

Take measurements or water clarity and dissolved oxygen levels to measure the water around the reef or five? weeks record results

Measure the percent of live coral coverage for five? weeks record results

Count population the fish for five? weeks record results

During the research phase, you found that the factory is not using nutrient-removal treatment on the water it releases. Excess nutrients in the water encourage algae growth, which can smother coral. To monitor the water quality and health of the coral reef, you will collect data on five factors: water clarity, dissolved oxygen levels, percentage of live coral coverage, number of juvenile parrot fish observed, and number of mature parrotfish observed.

Data:

Record your data from the virtual lab in the data table.

Week Water Clarity (m) Dissolved Oxygen Level (mg/L) Percentage of Live Coral Coverage (%) Number of Juvenile Parrotfish Number of Mature Parrotfish

0  6  14:00  35  8                             12

1  4  12:00  30  7                             12

4  2  9:00  20  4                                 9

Data Analysis:

Select one abiotic factor that was monitored, either water clarity or dissolved oxygen level, and create a line graph showing the measurement of the abiotic factor over time. Then select one biotic factor that was monitored, either coral coverage, juvenile parrotfish, or mature parrotfish, and create a line graph showing the measurement of the biotic factor over time.

Insert Chart [Hint: don't forget to create a line graph to analyze your data]

I cant include this part

Conclusion: I hypothesized that if pollution levels increase, then the health of the coral reef with decrease. My hypothesis was proven correct, the four-week time that had been recorded showed that every week the biotic and abiotic features would decrease. My graph shows the decrease in four weeks due to the factory.

Be sure to answer the following reflection questions as a summary in the conclusion of your lab report:

• Was your hypothesis correct? Why or why not? Be sure to include evidence from the data you collected to support your conclusion.

• Based on your data, describe the overall trend for each of the five factors that were measured?

• What information do your graphs show? Describe the correlation between the two factors that you graphed

Questions:

Using what you have learned in the lesson and the virtual lab activity, answer the following questions in complete sentences:

1. Identify the abiotic and biotic factors in this lab.

The water clarity and the dissolved oxygen level were abiotic and coral coverage, and the fish were biotic.

2. Describe the symbiotic relationship between each of the organisms.

Coral is a habitat for fish and if the coral isn’t in good condition the water most likely isn’t so the fish would decrease.

3. Explain how the limiting factors affect carrying capacity in each population.

Without proper healthy coral the fish would decrease and without livable water the fish will die?

The abiotic factors in the ocean help the ocean to 'work'. For example, phytoplankton (autotrophs) need light, nutrients, CO2 (dissolved gases) to photosynthesize. All of these factors are crucial to the primary producer!

Bacterial communities are an important part of biological diversity and biogeochemical cycling in aquatic ecosystems. In this study, the relationship amongst the phytoplankton species composition and abiotic environmental factors on seasonal changes in the community composition of free-living and attached bacteria in Lake Erhai were studied. Using Illumina high-throughput sequencing, we found that the impact of environmental factors on both the free-living and attached bacterial community composition was greater than that of the phytoplankton community, amongst which total phosphorus, Secchi disk, water temperature, dissolved oxygen and conductivity strongly influenced bacterial community composition. Microcystis blooms associated with subdominant Psephonema occurred during the summer and autumn, and Fragilaria, Melosira and Mougeotia were found at high densities in the other seasons. Only small numbers of algal species-specific bacteria, including Xanthomonadaceae (Proteobacteria) and Alcaligenaceae (Betaproteobacteria), were tightly coupled to Microcystis and Psephonema during Microcystis blooms. Redundancy analysis showed that although the composition of the bacterial communities was controlled by species composition mediated by changes in phytoplankton communities and abiotic environmental factors, the impact of the abiotic environment on both free-living and attached bacterial community compositions were greater than the impact of the phytoplankton community. These results suggest that the species composition of both free-living and attached bacterial communities are affected by abiotic environmental factors, even when under strong control by biotic factors, particularly dominant genera of Microcystis and Psephonema during algal blooms.

The human population is growling due to an interplay of many factors.

Why is human population is growing so tremendously in terms of numbers of births and deaths?

The human population is growing so tremendously in terms of numbers of births and deaths due to several factors, including:

Improved healthcare: Advances in medical technology and healthcare have led to a significant decrease in mortality rates, particularly in developing countries. This has resulted in more people surviving diseases and living longer lives.

Increased food production: Improved agricultural practices and technology have increased food production, resulting in more food being available to feed the growing population.

Higher fertility rates: Although fertility rates have declined in some countries, they remain high in many developing countries due to cultural and social factors, lack of access to family planning, and limited education and economic opportunities for women.

Urbanization: As people move from rural areas to cities, they tend to have smaller families, but the overall population continues to grow due to the influx of people into urban areas.

Overall, the growth of the human population is a complex issue that is influenced by a variety of social, economic, and environmental factors. It is important to address these factors to ensure that population growth is sustainable and does not result in negative consequences such as overconsumption of resources and environmental degradation.

(50 points) Describe in your own words how do mitosis and cell differentiation work together to produce

Answers

In multicellular organisms individual cells grow and then divide via a process called mitosis, thereby allowing the organism to grow. Cellular division and differentiation produce and maintain a complex organism, composed of systems of tissues and organs that work together to meet the needs of the whole organism.

Mitosis is a type of cell division which results in two daughter cells each having the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent nucleus.

What is diiferentiation?

Mitosis occurs in multicellular organism. Cellular differentiation is referred to as process by which a less specialized cell develop into a more specialized cell type.

Differentiation occurs many times during the development of a multicellular organism as the organism transform from a simple zygote to a complex system of tissues. Thus, mitosis and cell differentiation work together closely.

Differentiation is a usual process in adults and adult stem cells divide and develop into fully-differentiated daughter cells during tissue repair and during normal cell turnover.

Differentiation rapidly changes a cell's shape, size membrane potential, metabolic activity, and responsiveness to signals.

Answer:

If the climate changes, the lions with the heritable trait of an extra fold in the nasal cavity (turbinate) would be better adapted to the new environment due to the water vapor reabsorbtion this turbinate allows. Thus, through natural selection, these lions would be more likely to survive in the new climate, and pass their genetic variation (which includes the turbinate) to their offspring. As a result, the presence of this heritable trait of the turbinate would be more common in the population of lions in the new climate.

Humans as a species, have many different kinds of skin colors that change across the globe. The amount of melanin produced by melanocytes in the skin determines skin color, which is affected by genetic and environmental factors. There is no generic trend in human skin color, but skin color tends to be darker in populations that live closer to the equator, where there is more intense sunlight and a higher need for UV radiation protection. Skin color is lighter in populations living farther away from the equator, where there is less intense sunlight and a greater need for the skin to create vitamin D.
