What is the Origin of Christmas? Explain in 2-3 sentances
Also Merry christmas!

Answers

The term Christmas has its root in Christianity, one of the largest religions in the world. For Christians, this is a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, who is believed to be the son of God. The word ‘Christmas’ is an English term for ‘mass on Christ’s day’. Mass either means celebration or memorial or messiah.

It was around 3rd century A.D. that Christmas began to be celebrated as a Christian holiday (possibly) thanks to Sextus Julius Africanus, a Christian historian of the time.

However, before then the midwinter solstice was celebrated in Europe as a pagan festival. In fact, some of the practices and traditions we celebrate at Christmas stem from the pagan traditions practiced at the winter solstice.

It is though the origin of the date of 25th of December for Christmas was the “Christianizing of the dies Solis invicti nati (“day of the birth of the unconquered sun”)”. This was a festival during the Roman Empire that celebrated “the winter solstice as a symbol of the resurgence of the sun, the casting away of winter and the heralding of the rebirth of spring and summer.”

Before Christmas, people celebrated the winter solstice as part of the holiday known as Yule. Yule runs from December 21 into January and was widely celebrated across Northern Europe. It was a time of feasting, drinking, and sacrifice. Traditions such as yule singing (wassailing), the yule log, the yule goat, and the yule boar as still seen in Christmas celebrations across Europe today. Many of our modern Christmas customs such a the Christmas tree, advent calendar, and the advent wreath are German Christmas traditions.

Previous to that, in ancient Roman times, the festival of Saturnalia was held in honour of the god Saturn on the 17th December. The festival was later expanded to last until 23rd December. Saturnalia featured sacrifice, public banquets, gambling, gift-giving, and a general carnival-like atmosphere.

Around the 3rd or 4th century Christmas began to be celebrated as a festival and observance of Jesus Christ’s birth.

Some believe that the choice to have Christmas at the same time as the pagan celebrations as part of the effort to encourage people to convert to Christianity. Others however believe that the date coincides with the 25th March being the spring equinox and a time of creation, therefore Christ would have been conceived at that date and the 25th December is 9 months later.

What experience made Popé resent the Spaniards?

Answers

The retreat of the Spaniards left New Mexico in the power of the Puebloans.[16] Popé was a mysterious figure in the history of the southwest as there are many tales among the Puebloans of what happened to him after the revolt. Later testimony to the Spanish by the Pueblo people was probably colored by anti-Popé sentiments and a desire to tell the Spanish what they wanted to hear.
Apparently, Popé and his two lieutenants, Alonso Catiti from Santo Domingo and Luis Tupatu from Picuris, traveled from town to town ordering a return "to the state of their antiquity." All crosses, churches, and Christian images were to be destroyed. The people were ordered to cleanse themselves in ritual baths, to use their Puebloan names, and to destroy all vestiges of the Roman Catholic religion and Spanish culture, including Spanish livestock and fruit trees.Popé, it was said, forbade the planting of wheat and barley and commanded those natives who had been married according to the rites of the Catholic Church to dismiss their wives and to take others after the old native tradition.

The Puebloans had no tradition of political unity. Popé was a man of trust and strict policy. Therefore, each pueblo was self-governing, and some, or all, apparently resisted Popé's demands for a return to a pre-Spanish existence. The paradise Popé had promised when the Spanish were expelled did not materialize. A drought continued, destroying Puebloan crops, and the raids by Apache and Navajo increased. Initially, however, the Puebloans were united in their objective of preventing a return of the Spanish.

Alexander embarked on an ambitious military campaign to expand his empire, which eventually stretched from Greece and Egypt in the west to India in the east. He led his army to numerous victories, employing innovative military tactics and inspiring his troops with his leadership skills.

One of his most famous achievements was the conquest of the vast Persian Empire, which he accomplished through a series of decisive battles, including the Battle of Gaugamela in 331 BCE. This victory established Alexander as the ruler of a vast empire and marked a turning point in the balance of power in the ancient world.

In addition to his military prowess, Alexander was also a patron of Greek culture and philosophy. He fostered the spread of Hellenistic culture throughout his empire, blending Greek and local traditions and encouraging the exchange of ideas and knowledge.

Despite his remarkable military successes, Alexander's empire faced challenges and internal conflicts after his untimely death in 323 BCE at the age of 32. The correct answer is True, since 1977, the percentage of money spent by the state on highway expenditures has resulted in the state having many poorly maintained roads and not enough highways.

This has been a persistent problem for many states, as they struggle to balance their budgets while also trying to maintain and expand their transportation infrastructure. Despite the fact that highway expenditures have increased significantly over the years, many state governments continue to face budgetary constraints that prevent them from investing as much money as they would like in road maintenance and construction. How did the differences between the european settlers and the indigenous americans shape the encounter between the two peoples? additionally, how did european assumptions about the world influence the encounter and lay the groundwork for later caribbean history?

Answers

The Europeans arrived with the intention of colonization, expansion, and resource extraction, often disregarding the established societies, cultures, and land rights of the Indigenous peoples. This led to conflicts over land, resources, and power dynamics, resulting in violence, displacement, and the erosion of Indigenous autonomy.

The encounter between European settlers and Indigenous Americans was marked by cultural clashes, differing perspectives on land ownership, and contrasting social and political systems. European settlers viewed land as a commodity to be claimed and exploited, while Indigenous peoples had more communal and spiritual connections to the land. These differences in worldview and land use practices created tensions and conflicts over territory.

Furthermore, European assumptions about the world, driven by notions of colonialism, racial superiority, and economic expansion, influenced the encounter. Europeans considered themselves culturally and technologically superior, leading to the imposition of their beliefs, customs, and systems on Indigenous peoples. This included forced conversions to Christianity, displacement from ancestral lands, and the establishment of European economic structures.

These European assumptions and actions laid the groundwork for later Caribbean history by establishing patterns of colonization, exploitation, and inequality. The legacy of European dominance and the marginalization of Indigenous peoples shaped social, economic, and political structures in the Caribbean, contributing to ongoing struggles for autonomy, cultural preservation, and social justice.

How did the bourgeoisie want to vote for this Estates General? What was the decision that Louis XVI made on voting?

Answers

Answer:

The Estates-General had been summoned officially by King Louis XVI during the mid-months of 1789 (May 4-5), and hadn't been previously summoned since 1614.

It was made up of 1200 representatives that came from every province and city of France, to represent and speak up for their respective or assigned factions: Clergy, Nobility, Common-Folk.

(Quick Background paragraph) To understand the whole situation, we must have some background context first.

The Clergy are members of the first estate (highest in the french social hierarchy back in monarchist France). They make up approximately 130,000 people (priests, archbishops, cardinals, etc...) They received 1 vote at the Estates-General.

The Nobility are members of the second estate (middle in the french social hierarchy back in monarchist France). They made up approximately 350,000 people (barons, viscounts, counts...). They had also received 1 vote.

The Common Folk are members of the third estate (last in the french social hierarchy back in monarchist France). They made up everyone else in the country (doctors, beggars, lawyers, teachers, butchers, fishermen, soldiers)... and included a special "Bourgeoisie" category within it, that weren't usually considered members of the third estate. The bourgeoisie were rich individuals and families (who although sometimes had a wealthier net worth than nobles, could not be placed higher in the ladder because they lack a title and lineage). The common folk made up approximately 27 million people, and also got 1 vote.

The Voting Problem

The King had equally distributed the votes to factions of different needs and populations. A grave mistake. Obviously, the people wanted change, more freedom, to end hunger, more rights! Residents of France that were dependent on (for example), taxes and forced labor (such as clergymen and nobles), were against all of these reforms (since it would take a heavy toll on their incomes, the value of their rank, and centuries of tradition).

This caused the two first factions to bong together, forming a sort of "alliance", and constantly, they would outvote the common folks' decisions since all the votes are equal.

For example:

"We must give freedom to man, and bring equality amongst all citizens of France".

Clergy (130,000) = No. = 1 vote

Nobility (350,000) = No. = 1 vote

Common Folk (27,000,000) = Aye. = 1 vote

Total: 480,000 Nay / 27,000,000 Yes

However, the results show up as 2-1.

--

It does not pass. It was not a reliable voting system, since over 400,000 people would always keep power and outvote a group 70 times larger.

CLEAR ANSWER:

The bourgeoisie wanted a voting method that showed an end to this problem, a more logical and mathematically acceptible one. One that they never got, which forced them to form their own government elsewhere.

So what happened later?

The Estates-General would quickly dissolve, and the King would kick the common folk out of their newly named government building, which would force them to relocate to a nearby tennis court (June 20th, 1789) and sign the Tennis Court Oath. This would be the beginning of a nation that could not go back to its old ways (do remember that the revolution, at its beginning, only wished for a constitutional monarchy and more rights for citizens).

how did queen Elizabeth 1 get affected by going to prison

Answers

Answer:

Queen Elizabeth I was imprisoned in the Tower of London for a short period in 1554. During her imprisonment, she was interrogated by the Queen's council. It is not clear how her imprisonment affected her, but it was likely a difficult and stressful experience.

Imprisonment in the Tower of London during the Elizabethan era was known to be harsh, with prisoners being subjected to torture and other forms of punishment.

Explanation:

Elizabeth I was imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1554 by her half-sister, Queen Mary I, who suspected her of being involved in a rebellion against her. Elizabeth was taken to the Tower by boat and was imprisoned there for two months. During her imprisonment, Elizabeth was interrogated by the Queen's council. Although Elizabeth had luxurious accommodations and around a dozen servants, she was still a prisoner. She must have felt she would end her days in the Tower just like her mother, who was executed as a traitor.

Elizabeth's imprisonment did not seem to impact her later life significantly. Throughout the unhappy years of Mary's childless reign, Elizabeth continually protested her innocence, affirmed her unwavering loyalty, and proclaimed her pious hatred of heresy. Elizabeth's blend of cunning, courage and majestic self-display inspired ardent expressions of devotion and helped unify the nation against foreign enemies. Elizabeth's reign is called the Elizabethan Age, and it was a time of great prosperity and cultural achievement in England.

In Elizabethan England, prisons and jails existed, but they could not handle large numbers of prisoners who would remain behind bars for long periods. The purpose of punishment was to deter people from committing crimes and to uphold the social order. PAs a result, prisoners were often "racked," which involved having their arms and legs fastened to a frame stretched to dislocate their joints. However, there is no evidence that Elizabeth was subjected to such treatment during her imprisonment in the Tower.
