A Spark Neglected Burns the House
by Leo Tolstoy (adapted excerpt)
There once lived in a village a peasant named Iván Stcherbakóf. He was comfortably off, in the prime of life, the best worker in the village, and had three sons all able to work. The eldest was married, the second about to marry, and the third was a big lad who could mind the horses and was already beginning to plough. Iván's wife was an able and thrifty woman, and they were fortunate in having a quiet, hard-working daughter- in-law. There was nothing to prevent Iván and his family from living happily. They had only one idle mouth to feed; that was Iván's old father, who suffered from asthma and had been lying ill for seven years. Iván had all he needed three horses and a colt, a cow with a calf, and fifteen sheep. The women made all the clothing for the family, besides helping in the fields, and the men tilled the land. They always had grain enough of their own to last over beyond the next harvest and sold enough oats to pay the taxes and meet their other needs. So Iván and his children might have lived quite comfortably had it not been for a feud between him and his next-door neighbor, Limping Gabriel, the son of Gordéy Ivánof.
As long as old Gordéy was alive and Iván's father was still able to manage the household, the peasants lived as neighbors should. If the women of either house happened to want a sieve or a tub, or the men required a sack, or if a cart-wheel got broken and could not be mended at once, they used to send to the other house, and helped each other in neighborly fashion. When a calf strayed into the neighbor's thrashing-ground, they would just drive it out, and only say, "Don't let it get in again, our grain is lying there." And such things as locking up the barns and outhouses, hiding things from one another, or backbiting were never thought of in those days. That was in the fathers' time. When the sons came to be at the head of the families, everything changed.

From Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen, 1813:
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.
However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighborhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.
“My dear Mr. Bennet,” said his lady to him one day, “have you heard that Netherfield Park is let (1) at last?”
Mr. Bennet replied that he had not.
“But it is,” returned she; “for Mrs. Long has just been here, and she told me all about it.”
Mr. Bennet made no answer.
“Do you not want to know who has taken it?” cried his wife impatiently.
“You want to tell me, and I have no objection to hearing it.”
This was invitation enough.
“Why, my dear, you must know, Mrs. Long says that Netherfield is taken by a young man of large fortune from the north of England; that he came down on Monday in a chaise and four (2) to see the place, and was so much delighted with it, that he agreed with Mr. Morris immediately; that he is to take possession before Michaelmas(3), and some of his servants are to be in the house by the end of next week.”
“What is his name?”
“Bingley.”
“Is he married or single?”
“Oh! Single, my dear, to be sure! A single man of large fortune; four or five thousand a year. What a fine thing for our girls!”
“How so? How can it affect them?”
“My dear Mr. Bennet,” replied his wife, “how can you be so tiresome! You must know that I am thinking of his marrying one of them.”
“Is that his design in settling here?”
“Design! Nonsense, how can you talk so! But it is very likely that he may fall in love with one of them, and therefore you must visit him as soon as he comes.”
1 let: rented
2 chaise and four: a carriage pulled by four horses
3 Michaelmas: Feast of St. Michael and All Angels, a minor Christian holiday celebrated on September 29th
Source: Pride and Prejudice is in the public domain.

She is a detached and somewhat sarcastic partner to her husband.
She is a loving and giving mother who wants her daughters to find true love.
She is a thoughtful communicator who thinks before she speaks.
She is talkative gossip fixated on marrying her daughters off to a wealthy man.
Question 3 (1 point)
Which of the following lines spoken by Mrs. Bennet help to support your responses to the previous question?
Question 3 options:
“A single man of large fortune; four or five thousand a year. What a fine thing for our girls!”
“…How can you be so tiresome!”

“… you must visit him as soon as he comes.”
Question 4 (1 point)
Pride and Prejudice is a British novel written in 1813. Based on the passage above (in Q1), what can you infer about societal norms or attitudes towards women during this time period?
Question 4 options:
Women’s financial security often depended on men.
Women were generally considered greedy and opportunistic.
Women generally cared more about love and romance rather than practical matters such as finances.
Women were often encouraged by their families to seek their own fortune.
Question 5 (1 point)
Based on the passage above and the role of women in society at the time, what can you infer is the author’s intended meaning of the first line: “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife”?
Question 5 options:
The author’s meaning is literal; she directly states that every single, rich man is looking for a wife.
The author’s tone is ironic; she implies that everyone knows a single, rich man will be pursued by women who want to be his wife.
The author’s tone is romantic; she suggests that marriage is what everyone seeks, no matter how rich or poor.
The author’s tone is ambiguous; she tries to intentionally confuse the reader to create a sense of mystery.
Answer:
Eager and excited.
Explanation:
For question #1, you want to think about the adjectives used to describe Ms. Bennett and how Mr. Bennett and others interact with her.
So, what do we know?
Ms. Bennett is impatient, she yelled at her husband, she complained to her husband about Mrs. Long. She says things with exclamation points at the end at lot, so she's definitely excited. She cares about her daughters and wants them to be married. She complains that her husband is frustrating (tiresome) to her.
Let's look at the options:
A) Confused and irritable. She certainly seems irritable but I don't' think she's confused about what she wants or how she feels. She seems to have very strong opinions and know what her opinions are.
B) Dreamy and lost: Neither of these adjectives fit with what we just read. She is not lost and though she has dreams for her daughters, she's not dreamy per se.
C) Eager and Excited: both of these fit. She is very excited, impatient, eager for her husband to see her point of view and for action to be taken.
D) Logical and rude: She is a bit rude to her husband, complaining to him and being demanding. And logical, eh, maybe true but not the best fit.
For this passage I would say that C, eager and excited, fits best.

HELP!!! 20 Read Edward Corsi’s quotation from the book Immigrant Kids by Russell Freedman.
Edward Corsi, who later became United States Commissioner of Immigration, was a ten-year-old Italian immigrant when he sailed into New York harbor in 1907:
Giuseppe and I held tightly to Stepfather’s hands, while Liberta and Helvetia clung to Mother. Passengers all about us were crowding against the rail. Jabbered conversations, sharp cries, laughs and cheers – a steadily rising din filled the air. Mothers and fathers lifted up babies so that they too could see, off to the left, the Statue of Liberty.
How does this quotation add credibility to Freedman’s statement that the immigrants never forgot seeing the Statue of Liberty for the first time?
It adds credibility because it comes from a worker on the ship who sailed past the Statue of Liberty.
It adds credibility because it comes from an immigrant who actually shares his memories of seeing the Statue of Liberty.
It adds credibility because it comes from a historian who studied immigrants and the Statue of Liberty.

Hades and Persephone qualifies as a myth because it is connected to Greek culture, explains the changing seasons, and follows patterns found in other myths.
Hades and Persephone qualifies as a myth because it meets all three criteria of a myth. Firstly, it is connected to regions, traditions, and belief systems. The story of Hades and Persephone originates from ancient Greek mythology, which was an integral part of Greek culture and religion. The Greeks believed in a pantheon of gods and goddesses, and Hades, the god of the Underworld, was one of them. Secondly, this myth answers the question "why?" by explaining the changing of seasons. The tale narrates how Persephone, the daughter of Demeter, was abducted by Hades and taken to the Underworld, leading to her mother's grief and the barrenness of the earth.
When Persephone is allowed to return to the surface, the earth blossoms once again. This myth explains the cycle of the seasons, providing a rationale for why the world goes through periods of abundance and scarcity. Finally, the story of Hades and Persephone follows patterns commonly found in myths. It includes motifs of abduction, separation from the divine realm, and a journey to the underworld. These recurring elements in the narrative structure demonstrate the myth's adherence to established patterns. Overall, Hades and Persephone meets the criteria of a myth by being rooted in a specific culture, providing an explanation for natural phenomena, and adhering to recognizable patterns.

B) both are forms of dripstone; stalactites hang from the ceiling, stalagmites grow upward from the cavern floor
The statement that is not true is option A: stalagmites form on the floors of caves below the water table.
Stalagmites are formed from the ground up, as mineral-rich water drips from the tip of a stalactite, leaving behind a small deposit that over time can grow into a stalagmite.
They typically form on the floor of a cave, but only in areas where the mineral-rich water drips from the ceiling and accumulates on the ground.
However, the water table, which is the level below which the ground is saturated with water, is typically located much deeper below the surface of the earth and is not related to the formation of stalagmites.
