Our goal with this case study involving Pulse Storms is to learn how to identify a ZDR column (aka an updraft) using both standard and Dual-Pol products.
First, we want to do our situational awareness to best understand what is going on. Therefore, on the next page are the 500 mb map, as well as the sounding for Minneapolis, MN.
Next, we need to load the data. In the same Module as you found this file, you should see a file called “Quarter3HWdata.zip”. Please download this file and unzip it. There should be 19 files in there that are ready to be used in GRLevel3. This will load data from the KARX radar in La Crosse, WI.
Now let‘s load the data that you’ve just unzipped into GRLevel3. Let the data loop through a few times to get an idea of the event. This loop should be a BR0.5, which is Base Reflectivity at 0.5°. Next, loop the data through a few times for each of the following products: VIL, CR, Echo Tops, ZDR, CC, and HCA.
Next, let‘s go over how to identify an updraft using Dual-Pol products. This can be accomplished by using BR, ZDR, and CC together. I’d suggest that before you advance any further you give a quick (re-)read of the “Updraft (ZDR Column)” section on page 43 in the Dual-Pol Students Guide.
To start with, let’s use the Melting Layer tool to estimate the freezing level. You can turn this on by clicking the button directly beneath the HCA tab.
In doing this, a series of 4 rings should appear on the display. Further, these rings should be centered on the radar site.
If you need a refresher in how to interpret the Melting Layer, then take another look at Figures 5-2 and 5-3 in the Dual-Pol Students Guide.
Next, we would like to look at 4 panels at once! To do this, first go to the Windows tab, then select Four Panels. The 4 panels you need to display are (clockwise from top left) BR1.5, ZDR1.5, CC1.5, and HCA1.5. In order to get the panels set up properly, first select the panel you want to change by clicking on this panel. Next, simply select the product and angle you want from the tabs above. This should do it! It should look something like this:

With all this information, you should be able to answer the following questions:
