The experiences of the WTO in 1999 and 2008 suggest which of the following?
a. the rapid weakening of state sovereignty
b. an increase in antiglobalization activism
c. the power of MNCs to derail trade liberalization talks
d. the increased power of NGOs to promote global human rights

Answers

The experiences of the WTO in 1999 and 2008 suggest an increase in antiglobalization activism and the power of NGOs to promote global human rights Therefore the correct option is D.

In 1999, the WTO faced significant protests from antiglobalization activists who opposed the organization's policies that they believe would harm developing countries. Similarly, in 2008, talks aimed at global trade liberalization failed due to disagreements over agricultural subsidies and tariffs.

Both instances signaled the growing power of civil society groups, including NGOs, in shaping global economic policies and promoting human rights. While some argue that these incidents showcased the rapid weakening of state sovereignty, others point to the significant power that MNCs continue to exert in derailing trade liberalization talks.

A. Obtaining evidence about assertions related to account balances or classes of transactions
B. Evaluating the adequacy of evidence gathered in response to unexpected account balances
C. Identifying unusual or unexpected account balances or relationships among account balances that were not previously identified during the audit
D. Evaluating the adequacy of evidence gathered in response to unexpected relationships among account balances

Answers

Auditors would be least likely to use analytical procedures near the end of the audit for evaluating the adequacy of evidence gathered in response to unexpected relationships among account balances.

Analytical procedures are an important tool used by auditors to evaluate financial information and assess the reasonableness of account balances, transactions, and relationships. They involve comparing financial data with expectations and investigating significant variations or inconsistencies.

Near the end of the audit, auditors typically focus on finalizing their procedures and forming conclusions based on the evidence gathered throughout the audit. At this stage, they are less likely to use analytical procedures to evaluate the adequacy of evidence gathered in response to unexpected relationships among account balances.

Instead, auditors are more likely to use analytical procedures for other objectives listed in the options. For example, they may use analytical procedures to obtain evidence about assertions related to account balances or classes of transactions, identify unusual or unexpected account balances or relationships, or evaluate the adequacy of evidence gathered in response to unexpected account balances.

What kind of stereotypes for black people became popular following the Civil War, during Reconstruction and Jim Crow? Why? What were some that became popular?

Answers

Following the Civil War, during Reconstruction and Jim Crow, negative stereotypes of black people became popular in an attempt to justify the unequal treatment of African Americans.

These unfavourable stereotypes of African Americans were employed during Reconstruction and Jim Crow to support segregation, deny black people their civil rights, and advance the notion of white supremacy.

African Americans were denied equal access to economic opportunities and had their voting and educational rights restricted as a result of these misconceptions. The prejudices depicted black people as less intelligent than white people, unable to support themselves, and unable to make valuable contributions to society.

The preconceptions were generally accepted by the general public and were reinforced by the media, literature, and other aspects of popular culture. The "lazy Sambo," the "Mammy," the "Brutal Savage," and the "Uncle Tom" were some of these stereotypes.

TEXT: The first effect of the creation of the 13 colonies was that Britain grew very rich. Each colony now had productive farms and new towns growing as trading posts. Britain profited from these by taxation. Everything grown, bought or sold in the American Colonies was somehow taxed by Britain.

Another effect was the British Colonies became destinations for thousands of immigrants from England and elsewhere in Europe. Wealthy Europeans were eager to claim new land for plantations or make fortunes from trade in the new cities. Middle-class European farmers hoped they could get new farmland of their own. Many poor English and Scots-Irish settlers hoped they could find better lives in America working as indentured servants and hopefully purchasing land of their own someday.

Every new English colony was a new disaster for the Native Americans. The forests they hunted were cut down to make way for farms and plantations. More and more tribes became pushed off their land, either being cheated by false negotiations, or forced out with violence. When tribes fought back, the English settlers would retaliate harshly with gunfire and arson, burning entire villages to the ground. Worse still was the invisible killer that British settlers brought with them: diseases like smallpox and plague, which spread among native tribes quickly and for which they had no immunity or treatments. Sometimes, colonists would give infected blankets to natives to spread diseases on purpose. Ultimately for the native tribes, the effects of British settlement in America were tragic and irreversible. By the mid 1700s, most tribes had nearly vanished from the Atlantic coast.

The final effect of the British Colonies was the introduction of slavery to North America. The first kidnapped Africans in the American Colonies were brought to Jamestown as slaves to work in the new tobacco plantations. Slavery would spread throughout the new colonies, with cities as far north as New York being used as trading posts for slave auctions. Mainly however, slavery was much more concentrated in the southern colonies, which had large tobacco and rice plantations requiring many laborers. In the Southern Colonies, African people were simply considered property. Laws in Maryland only referred to Africans in terms of planters’ property rights. A Virginia law in 1642 punished people for hiding runaway slaves or indentured servants. Free blacks were eventually permitted to live and own property in northern colonies, and slavery in the north slowly became outlawed. In the south, however, the plantation economies of the colonies depended almost completely on slave labor.

Answer:

Two government crisis agencies that have assisted during times of emergency in the past are FEMA and The Department Of Homeland Security.

FEMA is actively contacting California Wildfire survivors to determine their housing needs and working diligently to identify additional short-term and long-term housing options.

The Department of Homeland Security has a vital mission: to secure the nation from the many threats we face. This dedication includes jobs that range from aviation and border security to emergency response. Their duties are wide-ranging, and their goal is keeping America safe.

The importance of having a prepared crisis response is the fact that in most sudden impact disasters, there is no reason why recovery planning should not begin the day after the event. Having made that point, however, it is important to note that time is socially necessary in recovery. Consultation must take place, and alternative strategies must be investigated. The aim should not be to “bounce back,” but to “bounce forward” to a more resilient society that is able to face up to future disasters by a better combination of resistance and adaptation than that which existed before the current impact. Recovery from a major disaster can take decades, and during that time socio-economic conditions will change, and so probably will environmental and hazard conditions. A disaster characterized by death, injury, psychological impairment, destruction, damage, and loss of economic activities, assets, and employment will engender a complex aftermath. In this there is much potential for wrong decisions, unless objectives are carefully set, procedures are clearly identified, and there is a consensus about how the process should take place.

One such example for FEMA and The National Guard in the California Wildfires is the fact that when a Major Disaster Declaration was officially announced on November 12, 2018. The National Guard helped with evacuation procedures when local infrastructure was damaged and severely compromised, they worked with the host government of California to arrange chartered and/or non-commercial transportation for U.S. citizens seeking to depart. This included transportation by air, land and sea.

In the case of FEMA, the agency has approved more than $12.7 million in federal assistance for survivors affected by wildfires in three California counties, Butte, Los Angeles and Ventura. The funding includes grants for temporary housing and home repairs and low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses. FEMA has joined with California to set up a disaster recovery center, a one-stop shop where residents affected by the fires can file insurance claims, obtain grants for food and shelter, and register for other federal aid. The agency has so far received more than 16,000 applications for assistance. About 550 FEMA staff members are on the ground helping local officials.

We cannot overlook the fact that there have been situations where we hoped the efficiency of these agencies were better. For example FEMA took on a larger role in Puerto Rico after hurricane Maria. In the case of Puerto Rico last year, Hurricane Maria destroyed most of the island’s infrastructure and the local government was overwhelmed by the size of the destruction. That left the agency to assume more responsibility, like delivering supplies, a job typically left to the states. Having the agency take on a larger role than what is mandated by the law “is never a good situation,” Brock Long, the agency’s administrator, told the Senate Homeland Security Committee in October 2017. “When FEMA is the first and primary responder, and the only responder for many weeks, we are never going to move as fast as anybody would like.”

When a government tries to boost their military and National Security a budget proposal may suggest massive cuts across the federal government to include governmental aid agencies.

The argument for is the fact that approved public repair projects are paid through the state from funding provided by FEMA and other participating federal agencies. Funding for these agencies is a must in order to help them accomplish their mission which is to help people before, during, and after disasters.
