Answers

Answer: Critical thinking questions and answers <3

Explanation:

-Describe the nature vs. nurture debate. Which do you think has a greater influence on humans—nature or nurture? When I think about which is more meaningful and helps a child I would pick nurture. Parents who nurture their children, and cuddle with them and show them love has a greater influence on them growing up. You see kids that were locked in a room and never had a parent to nurture them, and they don’t understand much about love.

-Which of the agents of socialization do you think is most important to teaching culture? Why? In my opinion the primary agent of socialization is the most important for teaching culture. Why? Because our family best knows what our culture and tradition is rather than other people, not only that but they teach us values, norms and  other necessary things.

-Discuss one way that your family helped to socialize you to your culture’s norms or values. Who was involved? What did you learn? My parents used to have me order food at restaurants on my own when I was growing up, this helped me learn how to be independent on only myself, and not on others for helping me.

-Cooley argues that our self develops through interactions and our impressions about how other people see us. Do you think that he is correct? Why or why not? As a teenage girl who thinks more of what others think of myself, I completely agree with Cooley. Those opinions are far more revealing than a mirror. A confident person is formed when someone begins with an image of themselves that is nurtured by the feedback of others.

-Sociologists argue that we internalize some norms so that we feel guilty or “icky” if we break those norms. What is an example from your own life of a norm that you’ve internalized? Why do you think you’ve internalized this norm? (Think about rules or behaviors that you’d feel guilty breaking or things that you can’t imagine doing because they would be really bad or gross to help you find an example). The notion of bullying a person is an excellent example of internalization. Cockroaches are a huge fear of mine. I would prefer to eat a live cockroach before I would make someone feel worse about themselves. Bullying is the type of negativity that is definitely not needed in this world. I’ve experienced what it is like to not be able to look in the mirror without hating myself before due to something that someone has said. That is most likely the reason that that particular internalization happened.

The nature vs. nurture argument is still being discussed. Instead of considering the potential affects of early environment and development, the present argument frequently focuses on the impact that genes have on human disposition.

The way that people interpret this issue has evolved along with civilization.

What is nature vs nurture debate?

Nature mostly refers to our DNA. It contains the genes we inherit from our parents as well as additional genetic traits that may have an impact on how our personalities are formed and how we grow from childhood to maturity.

Environmental influences on our personalities are included in nurture. This encompasses our early experiences, how we were raised, our social connections, and the culture around us.

The nature versus. nurture argument is focused on how genetics and environment affect human development. This viewpoint's proponents contend that all of our traits and actions are the product of evolution. Other prominent thinkers, like John Locke, held the view that our experiences shape who we are in every way.

Answers

If a person judges another group by their own standards, they are being: a. ethnocentric.

In social science and anthropology, as well as in everyday English language, the term "ethnocentrism" refers to the practise of using one's own culture or ethnicity as a frame of reference to evaluate other cultures, practises, behaviours, ideas, and individuals rather than the norms of the specific culture in question.

Some people also use the term to refer to the conviction that one's culture is superior to, or more right or normal than, all others—especially when it comes to the distinctions that define each ethnicity's cultural identity, such as language, behaviour, customs, and religion.

This judgement is frequently negative because it implies that one's culture is superior to, or more correct, or normal than, all others.

Feature
Editorial: Time to Graduate from the Electoral College
Louis Vincent

1Every four years, millions of people head to the polls on Election Day to vote for a new president. It is their right and duty as U.S. citizens to do so. In the months before the election, they watch the candidates argue about important issues. They read articles about the candidates' promises. They see ads that draw attention to the candidates' strengths and weaknesses. Armed with this knowledge and their own beliefs, citizens choose the candidate whom they believe will lead our country in the right direction. Or do they?

2In the United States, the people do not directly pick the president. Rather, our country gives this important power to the Electoral College. The Electoral College is a body of electors selected by the people in each state to officially choose the next president. How does the Electoral College work? On Election Day, voters take part in the popular vote. They press a button or pull a lever to vote for a presidential candidate. What they actually do, however, is pick the electors who will become members of the Electoral College. These electors pledge to vote for the chosen candidate in another election held in mid-December.

3The number of members each state has in the Electoral College depends on its population. A state with a large population has more votes than a state with a small population. For example, California has 55 votes while Alaska has 3. In most states, the candidate who wins the popular vote wins all of that state’s electoral votes. A candidate must receive a majority of the electoral votes to become the next president. How many electoral votes is enough to win? In recent elections, candidates have had to earn at least 270 of the 538 electoral votes to win.

4In theory, this system should work, and it has worked—most of the time. A few times, however, the system has failed. In these cases, the candidate with fewer popular votes gained enough electoral votes to win the election. This occurred during the 2000 presidential election when more people voted for Al Gore, but George W. Bush earned more electoral votes and became the president. What causes such a breakdown in the system to happen? Let's return to the example of California and Alaska. A single vote in California has the power to override thousands of votes in other states. Imagine that only one person in California casts a vote for Candidate A. That candidate wins the popular vote in California 1–0. He or she gets all of California's 55 electoral votes. Across the country, thousands of voters in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Delaware cast their votes for Candidate B. Not one voter casts a vote for Candidate A. These states have a combined 52 electoral votes, which is not enough to beat California's 55. How can the leaders of our country believe that this system is fair?

5A long time ago, Americans were scattered far and wide about the country. It made sense to have representatives who voted for them. In this day and age, however, polling places are practically in the next room for most people. With the use of computers, it is possible to tally votes quickly and accurately. The need for the "middle man" is gone. U.S. citizens are perfectly capable of choosing the person they want for president without interference. It is time to graduate from the Electoral College and let the people decide. You want your vote to matter, don't you?

The author wrote this passage to argue against the Electoral College system.

What is Electoral?

Electoral refers to the process of voting to elect officials to represent a population in politics or government. It is a fundamental part of a democratic system and is often seen as the most important form of political participation. Elections can be held at various levels, such as local, state, and national, and in some cases can be held both directly and indirectly. Electoral systems vary from country to country, but they all involve some form of voting to choose representatives. The outcome of an election is usually determined by the number of votes cast for each candidate or party.

The author provides an overview of how the system works and then highlights the potential flaws of the system. They draw attention to the fact that a single vote in one state can override thousands of votes from other states and that modern technology makes it possible for citizens to directly choose their president. The author then concludes by suggesting that it is time for the country to “graduate from the Electoral College” and let the people decide.

What are the theories that help explain the process of socialization?

Answer:

Looking-glass self Charles Horton Cooley Children gain an impression of how people perceive them as the children interact with them. In effect, children “see” themselves when they interact with other people, as if they are looking in a mirror. Individuals use the perceptions that others have of them to develop judgments and feelings about themselves.

Taking the role of the other George Herbert Mead Children pretend to be other people in their play and in so doing learn what these other people expect of them. Younger children take the role of significant others, or the people, most typically parents and siblings, who have the most contact with them; older children when they play sports and other games take on the roles of other people and internalize the expectations of the generalized other, or society itself.

Psychoanalytic Sigmund Freud The personality consists of the id, ego, and superego. If a child does not develop normally and the superego does not become strong enough to overcome the id, antisocial behavior may result.

Cognitive development Jean Piaget Cognitive development occurs through four stages. The final stage is the formal operational stage, which begins at age 12 as children begin to use general principles to resolve various problems.

Moral development Lawrence Kohlberg, Carol Gilligan Children develop their ability to think and act morally through several stages. If they fail to reach the conventional stage, in which adolescents realize that their parents and society have rules that should be followed because they are morally right to follow, they might well engage in harmful behavior. Whereas boys tend to use formal rules to decide what is right or wrong, girls tend to take personal relationships into account.

Identity development Erik Erikson Identity development encompasses eight stages across the life course. The fifth stage occurs in adolescence and is especially critical because teenagers often experience an identity crisis as they move from childhood to adulthood.
