As mentioned previously, the cost-benefit analysis of pollution control is just one answer in determining how much energy and money should be spent on reducing SO. emissions and, thus, its effects on the environment, For example, through the 1970s and 1980s, EPA regulations reduced so emissions primarily by mandating many large, coal-burning power plants to install specific, and often very expensive, equipment. By the late 1980s, these facilities knew of less expensive options for reducing so emissions but had no incentive to adopt them Which of the following best describes the economic tool used by the EPA through the 1970s and 1980s to reduce so emissions? O Incentive-based environmental regulations Cap-and-trade approach Command-and-control solutions Besides being an expensive tactic, what is another major limitation to this approach Discourages the development and employment of innovative pollution control technologies Focuses on buying goods instead of leasing services Requires continual monitoring of resource-use permits

Answers

The economic tool used by the EPA through the 1970s and 1980s to reduce SO emissions is Command-and-control solutions. Command-and-control regulations are usually required for sources that are challenging to control, and their effectiveness is increased with the number of pollutants released and the number of sources. Cap-and-trade approach and incentive-based environmental regulations are more flexible economic tools used to reduce emissions of pollutants.

Cap and trade is a market-based tool that reduces emissions while encouraging business growth and economic development. The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is achieved by setting a limit on the amount of pollutants that can be released and allowing companies to trade emissions permits. Companies that exceed their emissions cap must either reduce their emissions or purchase additional permits. Cap and trade allow the free market to determine the most efficient way to reduce pollution.

Incentive-based environmental regulations include a wide range of economic tools such as taxes, subsidies, and marketable permits. Such regulations attempt to give incentives to individuals and businesses to engage in activities that reduce pollution. This can include tax credits for purchases of environmentally friendly products or for investing in clean technology.

However, being an expensive tactic, the other major limitation to the Command-and-control approach is that it discourages the development and employment of innovative pollution control technologies. The significant expense of pollution-control equipment installation and operation, and the legal risks associated with noncompliance, discourage companies from investing in more efficient and cost-effective pollution-control technologies.

The way that humans efficiently and safely navigate their everyday world is through mental map.

A mental map is a person's internal representation of a particular environment, such as a city, town, or neighborhood. It includes landmarks, routes, and spatial relationships between different locations, and is based on a person's experiences and knowledge of the environment. Mental maps are an efficient and safe way for humans to navigate their everyday world because they allow individuals to quickly and easily recall important information about their environment, such as the location of their home, workplace, or favorite restaurant. Mental maps also help individuals make sense of their environment and organize their spatial knowledge in a meaningful way. While other tools, such as geographic information systems and scales, can also be helpful in navigation and spatial reasoning, mental maps are the primary way that humans efficiently and safely navigate their everyday world.

Explain why our Earth is fragile?

Answers

Answer:

The Earth is different because it has life on it…obviously. And the factors that make it so, is why it is regarded as a fragile planet.

Explanation:

For example, one of the reasons Earth supports life is its location in the solar system. The venerable Habitable Zone. If the earth was, say in Venus’ orbit for example, runaway greenhouse effect would create so much heat, it would not be able to hold surface water.

So we’re lucky to be in the correct distance from the Sun, however, distance is not the only factor here. If the planet was covered in ice for example, its reflectivity (also called albedo) would cause the surface temperature to be either cool, if albedo is high and vice versa.

So, again, we’re lucky to have just the right amount of surface reflectivity. How about our atmosphere? The atmosphere provides us with life sustaining weather, temperature regulation and shields us from deadly radiation. The composition of our atmosphere is crucial in how atmosphere interacts with solar radiation. Some gases, such as Carbon Dioxide and Water vapor, allow visible light to pass through which is good for those important things like…seeing. Unfortunately, these same gases prevent radiation from being reflected back out into space in what is referred to as The Greenhouse Effect. Every planet with an atmosphere has this at different degrees and is what heats up the planets. The dissipation of the greenhouse gases also determines for how long the planet will retain its heat, for example, water vapor may take a week while Carbon dioxide takes about 100 years. Again, luckily for us, we only have a trace amount of Carbon dioxide, less than 0.1% of it.

How about the one ingredient that we can’t do without? Oxygen? It turns out that we don’t have that much in the atmosphere. Only about 21% of our atmosphere contains oxygen. If we had less, we would have weak hearts, prone to diseases, slow and probably still be in the dark ages. If there was too much of it and someone farted, the atmosphere would simply combust and murder everyone since oxygen is highly reactive. The highest oxygen content that could be safely stored in our atmosphere is about 35%. Luckily we have giant recycling plants called…well, plants. We also have oxygen reserves in our oceans, crust and beneath ice caps.

The odds for all these factors that have occurred on our little blue marble, albeit over millions of years, to be replicated on another planet and support life as we know on earth is literally a 1 in a not-happening.

All these things are maintained by a very delicate natural balance and can unfortunately be undone by both natural and man-made effects. Hence, our planet is very fragile.

1. What were the various myths that Americans created about the mound builders? Why were some of these myths harmful for American Indians? 2. What aspects of the Hopewell and Mississippian cultures defy traditional stereotypes of American Indians living north of Mexico? Explain what they are and why they are significant. 3. Why did Native Americans join the missions? What made the missions so destructive? What specific Spanish actions made the missions oppressive?

Answers

1. The various myths that Americans created about the mound builders were that the mound builders were not American Indians, but instead a lost tribe from another continent.

Some said that the mounds were built by European explorers from long before Columbus’s time. These myths were harmful for American Indians as they worked to erase the historical contributions of American Indians to North American culture.2. The Hopewell and Mississippian cultures defy traditional stereotypes of American Indians living north of Mexico in several ways. The Hopewell culture, for example, was a highly developed trading culture that constructed elaborate burial mounds.

The Mississippian culture was marked by large, walled cities with complex social and political structures. These cultures were significant as they showed that American Indians had complex societies with advanced technologies and that North America was not just a “wilderness” waiting to be tamed by Europeans.3. Native Americans joined the missions for various reasons, including the promise of food, clothing, and shelter.

However, the missions were ultimately destructive because they were designed to assimilate Native Americans into European culture and religion. The specific Spanish actions that made the missions oppressive include forced labor, beatings, and whippings, as well as the removal of Native American children from their families and communities to be raised in European-style boarding schools.

Hominins are the family of bipedal primates which includes modern humans and their extinct ancestors. The family Hominidae, which includes Homo sapiens, is a subgroup of the superfamily Hominoidea that includes apes and monkeys.

Key Features that differentiate hominins from ape ancestors include:Size and shape of canine teeth. The earliest hominins had canines that were roughly equal in size to their other teeth, much like modern-day humans. In contrast, chimpanzees and other primates have long, pointed canines that they use to defend themselves, fight for social status, and occasionally kill prey.

Bipedalism: Hominins are the only primates that are exclusively bipedal, meaning that they walk on two legs. Anatomical features such as the shape of the pelvis and position of the foramen magnum support the idea that bipedalism was the first major hominin adaptation.

Dental morphology: Hominins have teeth that are smaller, less prognathic, and less complex than those of their ape ancestors. These changes reflect a shift toward a diet that relied less on hard, abrasive foods and more on cooked and processed foods.

Adaptive Transitions leading to the suite of traits we now find in modern Homo sapiens include:Hominins' skeletal structure started changing, and the pelvis, femur, and skull became different. Hominins had longer, slimmer thigh bones, which were adapted for bipedalism, as well as an inward tilt of the knee and pelvis, which helps to balance the body's weight over the legs in this upright posture.

The brain size of Homo erectus is larger than that of Homo habilis. Homo erectus, for example, had a larger brain size than Homo habilis. Homo erectus, like Homo habilis, was capable of producing stone tools and had a fully upright posture and bipedal gait. The emergence of Homo sapiens also brought about changes in culture and society. Agriculture, the creation of towns and cities, the development of written language, and the evolution of art and music are all examples of how humans' cognitive abilities have enabled them to create and advance culture.

fossilized Archaeopteryx a) In which era did it appear? b) Why is it important as a fossil that "links" change between different groups of organisms? c) Using this recreation of Archeopteryx, what evidence can you see that relates to this connection?

Answers

Archaeopteryx first appeared in the Late Jurassic Period which is a geological era of the Mesozoic Era that lasted from about 163.5 to 145.5 million years ago. The fossilized remains of Archaeopteryx were discovered in 1861 in the region of Solnhofen in Germany.

Archaeopteryx is important as a fossil that "links" change between different groups of organisms because it has characteristics of both birds and reptiles, suggesting that birds may have evolved from reptiles. Archaeopteryx is considered a transitional form between non-avian dinosaurs and birds, possessing both reptilian and avian features.

It has a mix of features found in modern birds, such as feathers and wings, as well as features found in non-avian dinosaurs, such as teeth and a long, bony tail. This makes it a valuable specimen for scientists studying the evolution of birds.

Using the recreation of Archaeopteryx, some of the evidence that relates to the connection between birds and reptiles include: Feathers: Archaeopteryx had feathers, which are a characteristic feature of birds. However, these feathers were not as specialized as those of modern birds. They were asymmetrical and lacked hooks, barbs, and a central shaft.

This suggests that feathers may have evolved for purposes other than flight, such as insulation or display.Bird-like skull: Archaeopteryx had a bird-like skull, with a short snout and large eyes. However, it also had a reptilian feature - teeth in its jaws.

This is unlike modern birds, which have a beak instead of teeth. Reptilian tail: Archaeopteryx had a long, bony tail that was similar to that of non-avian dinosaurs. However, its tail was shorter and more flexible than that of its dinosaur ancestors. This suggests that the tail may have played a role in flight control, but was not used for balance while walking on the ground.

A shadow is formed by ...... bodies

Answers

Answer:

A shadow is formed by opaque bodies.

Explanation:

What is a shadow?

A shadow is a dark, two-dimensional shape formed on a nearby surface when an opaque body is placed in the path of light emitted by a source.

What are opaque bodies?

Objects that do not allow light rays to pass through them are known as opaque bodies. In other words, opaque bodies obstruct the path of incident light rays.

Why is a shadow formed?

A shadow is a dark two - dimensional cast of an opaque object placed in the path of light, on a nearby surface. Since the body obstructs the passage of light rays following that path and either deflects or absorbs them, so no light ray reaches the surface in the region covered by the projection of the body on that surface.

Men are from Mars (well, and so are Martians)….

Poof! We’ve now landed on Mars (welcome!) and find that 3 Martians have figured out how to raise foods familiar to us: Chocolate, bananas and tomatoes. Of course, the term ‘landed’ is a bit incorrect- it was something of a ‘smashing landing’ if you get my drift. We’ll be here until Earth sends another rocket our way.

The Chocolate producer only likes tomatoes, but not bananas and is willing to trade 3 pieces of chocolate for each tomato. The banana grower likes chocolate, but not tomatoes and is willing to trade 5 bananas for 7 pieces of chocolate. The tomato grower is building a new home, and only wants metal bolts (guess what, we found a large ‘bucket o’ bolts on our space ship). We’re hungry for all 3 things, and have a ‘ton’ of bolts.

So, how will we go about conducting trade (assume that our weapons are useless against them, and theirs useless against ours). What will this look like?

Answers

Since the chocolate manufacturer only likes tomatoes, he would be prepared to trade three pieces of chocolate for every tomato, and since the banana producer likes chocolate but dislikes tomatoes, he would be prepared to trade five bananas for seven pieces of chocolate.

Furthermore, since the tomato grower is constructing a new house and only requires metal bolts, it will be wise to trade bolts for tomatoes, since we have a plethora of them.

Based on this analysis, a fair trade would be seven pieces of chocolate to the banana grower, in exchange for five bananas, followed by nine bananas to the chocolate manufacturer, in exchange for 12 tomatoes. Finally, in exchange for a tomato, the tomato grower would receive a metal bolt. To sum up, we'll trade nine bananas for 12 tomatoes and one bolt, and we'll give the chocolate producer seven chocolates and get five bananas, and then give the tomato grower one bolt for one tomato.
