What is A&P about?

John Updike's tragicomic short story "A&P" was published in 1961. The A&P in Updike's narrative is what M. Gilbert Porter described as "the common denominator of middle-class suburbia, a fitting metaphor for [the] mass ethic of a consumer-conditioned society." Porter claims that the main character decides to rebel against the A&P and this consumer-conditioned culture when he does so, and that by doing so, he "has decided to live honestly and profoundly." The narrative, in contrast, was dubbed "deftly recounted drivel" by William Peden since it only involved the checking clerk's fascination with three females wearing swimming suits.

What can you conclude about the connection between the Jacquard loom and Babbage and Lovelace’s ideas?

Answers

The Jacquard loom, invented by Joseph-Marie Jacquard in the early 19th century, played a crucial role in the development of computing and the ideas put forth by Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace.

The Jacquard loom was a mechanical loom that used punched cards to control the weaving of intricate patterns. These punched cards acted as instructions for the loom, indicating which threads to raise or lower at specific points in the weaving process. This method allowed complex patterns to be woven automatically, eliminating the need for manual manipulation of individual threads.

Charles Babbage, a prominent mathematician and inventor, was inspired by the Jacquard loom's mechanism and its use of punched cards to control a mechanical process. He recognized that a similar approach could be applied to calculations and created plans for the Analytical Engine, a programmable mechanical computer.

Ada Lovelace, a mathematician and writer, collaborated with Babbage and made significant contributions to the development of the Analytical Engine. She not only translated an article on the Analytical Engine by Italian engineer Luigi Menabrea but also added extensive notes to it. Lovelace's notes included what is now considered the first published algorithm, demonstrating how the Analytical Engine could be programmed to solve complex mathematical calculations. Her work showed the potential for computers to go beyond mere number-crunching and be used for more general-purpose computations.

The connection between the Jacquard loom and Babbage and Lovelace's ideas lies in the concept of using punched cards as a means of control and programming. The Jacquard loom's mechanism of using punched cards to weave patterns served as an inspiration for Babbage's Analytical Engine, which aimed to use punched cards to control and automate calculations. Lovelace, building upon Babbage's ideas, recognized the broader possibilities of programming the Analytical Engine, paving the way for the concept of a universal computer.

In summary, the Jacquard loom's use of punched cards as a control mechanism influenced Babbage's vision of mechanical computing, and Lovelace's work expanded upon these ideas, foreseeing the potential for computers to perform diverse tasks beyond simple calculations. The connection between these inventions highlights the progression of ideas and technologies that ultimately contributed to the foundations of modern computing.

Final answer:

The Jacquard loom's use of punch cards to control operations greatly influenced Babbage and Lovelace's ideas about computer programming, effectively setting the stage for the concept of coding and data instruction.

Explanation:

The Jacquard loom, an automated, mechanical loom, played a crucial role in the development of Babbage and Lovelace’s ideas about computer programming. Invented by Joseph Marie Jacquard in 1804, it used punch cards to control the weave of the fabric, allowing complex patterns to be created automatically. This concept of using punch cards to dictate a machine's functions was revolutionary and directly inspired Charles Babbage's designs for his Analytical Engine, a general-purpose computer. Ada Lovelace translated and expanded on Babbage’s work, and she is often credited as the first computer programmer because she created an algorithm intended for processing by Babbage’s machine. In essence, the core principles of the Jacquard loom laid the groundwork for the early concept of coding and data instruction.

Once upon a time, there lived a man called Alhaji Ajase who had two wives named Alhaja Kudi and Alhaja Khadijat. Kudi, the first wife had only a son ten years after their wedding. Perhaps, that motivated t he man to marry another wife. The second wife had six children; three boys and three girls. The two wives lived a cat and dog life. The Alhaji was a wealthy man with fleet of cars, houses and industries. He was indeed a man of affluence.

Alhaja Khadijat who had six children hated not only the first wife but her only son. In a short while, she concluded arrangements to eliminate the first wife for no just cause, other than that she was jealous. She contacted a herbalist in their neighborhood to do her act. The herbalist requested for the first wife’s name a strand of her hair and her saliva. Khadijat got these before long without Kudi knowing. One day Kudi slept and died in her sleep. Khadijat was busy shedding crocodile tears; she wept for days, so much so that nobody ever suspected her as the killer of kudi.

After a year of Kudi’s death, she started maltreating Olubi, the only child of the deceased. The boy was only in primary for, but the wicked Khadijat made life unbearable for him. The boy became the family ‘house help’, but she hid this entirely from her husband as he would not take it kindly with her. This woman and her children took undue advantage of the death of Kudi to unleash terror on the ‘hopeless’ boy. He was denied comfort, food and other things of life despite his father’s riches. More often than not, Olubu was made to sleep in the pantry, where he had to battle with mice, mosquitoes and c**kroaches. Despite all these inhuman treatment meted out to him, he never fell sick for one day. Though, he was denied educational facilities by the step-mother, he always came first in all examinations.

It then came that Olubu and two children of Khadijat wrote National Common Entrance Examination. Despite thousands of Naira spent by the step-mother to aid her two children, it was only Olubu that passed in flying colours. In fact, he was awarded a scholarship as he came first in the examination in the entire country. the step-mother thought that the only masterstroke was to wickedly eliminate the body as she did to his mother, otherwise her own children would become his ‘errand boys and girls’ in future.

Alhaja Khadijat contacted the same herbalist who killed the boy’s mother to give her the same charms that killed his mother to kill him too, but the herbalist replied that the poison her had was not the same as the one of the past but it was equally effective. She got it and it was to be sprinkled on the boy’s food. She did it as she was told and travelled out of town so that nobody would suspect any foul play. She warned her six children secretly not to eat the poisoned food before she travelled out on her fake journey. At school, all the children were ordered to wait and do some manual labour, but Khadijat’s children being highly disobedient and wayward defined the order and went home. Olubu had no alternative, but to wait and complete the assignment before going home.

On getting home, Khadijat’s six children, at first, obeyed their mothers instruction not to eat the poisoned food. However, after finishing their own food and still not satisfied, they went ahead and ate out of the poisoned food reserved for Olubu. They quickly ate it and even fought each other in the process. Thereafter, t hey all entered their room and slept and all died in their sleep. Khadijat arrived from the market journey and met her six children dead instead of Olubu. Sh e cried, cried and cried and confessed that she did herself, that she killed Olubu’s mother out of jealousy and decided to kill her son too and that the whole exercise backfired. She was immediately reported to the king who asked the villagers to meet at the market square. Khadijat was sentenced to death by hanging. She pleaded for pardon but the people replied ‘you reap what you sow’. She was hanged at the market square.

How does the meaning of “emphasizes” different from the meaning of “shows”

Answers

The term "emphasizes" refers to the act of giving more importance or focus to a particular aspect or idea. When something is emphasized, it is highlighted as a crucial part of the overall message or argument. On the other hand, the term "shows" simply means to demonstrate or display something. It does not necessarily imply that the particular aspect being shown is of greater importance or significance.

For example, if a speaker is delivering a presentation on climate change, they may emphasize the importance of reducing carbon emissions as a way to mitigate its effects. This means that they are giving more focus and weight to the idea of reducing carbon emissions as a key solution to the problem of climate change.

In contrast, they may also show charts and graphs to illustrate the effects of climate change, but this does not necessarily mean that they are emphasizing the significance of these charts and graphs in the same way.

In summary, while both "emphasizes" and "shows" involve highlighting or bringing attention to something, the former implies a greater importance or significance being placed on that aspect, while the latter does not necessarily have that connotation.

why did the kingdom of kongo want to trade with the portuguese

Answers

The Kingdom of Kongo was interested in trading with the Portuguese for a variety of reasons. Some of the reasons are:

Access to European goods: The Portuguese brought European goods such as textiles, firearms, and luxury items that were not available in Kongo. The Kongo elites were interested in acquiring these goods for their own consumption and for trading with other African groups.

Economic benefits: The Portuguese were willing to pay for Kongo's exports of ivory, copper, and slaves. This created an economic incentive for the Kongo rulers to engage in trade with the Portuguese.

Military alliance: The Kongo rulers saw the Portuguese as potential military allies against their rivals in the region. The Portuguese had superior military technology, such as firearms, and were able to assist the Kongo army in conflicts against neighboring states.

Religious conversion: The Portuguese were also interested in spreading Christianity to Kongo, and this was an opportunity for the Kongo rulers to be introduced to a new religion and to establish religious ties with Europe.

Overall, the trade relationship between the Kingdom of Kongo and the Portuguese was based on a combination of economic, political, and cultural factors that were beneficial to both sides.

Imagine yourself as a Banquet Manager, Food and Beverage Manager, Or front office Manager. As discussed in the class which responsibilities can be delegated.

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:

As a Banquet Manager, Food and Beverage Manager or Front Office Manager, there are several responsibilities that can be delegated to other members of the team. Delegation is an important skill for any manager as it allows them to focus on high-level tasks while still ensuring that day-to-day operations run smoothly.

One of the main responsibilities that can be delegated is the supervision of daily tasks. This includes overseeing the set up and execution of events, ensuring that staff are properly trained and performing their duties efficiently, and monitoring inventory levels. By delegating these tasks to assistant managers or team leaders, the manager can focus on more strategic functions such as developing new menus, building relationships with clients and vendors, and analyzing financial reports.

Another area where delegation can be effective is in scheduling and staffing. Managers can delegate the responsibility of scheduling employees based on their availability and skill sets to team leads or human resources personnel. They can also delegate tasks related to hiring, training, and performance management, such as conducting interviews and providing feedback to employees.

In addition to these tasks, a manager can delegate decision-making responsibilities related to day-to-day operations. For example, they could empower their team leads to make decisions about customer service issues, minor policy changes, and resolving conflicts among team members. This not only helps to distribute the workload, but also helps to build a sense of ownership and accountability among team members.

However, it's important to note that not all responsibilities can be delegated. Managers must still maintain overall responsibility for the success of the operation and should never delegate important tasks such as financial reporting or ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.

In conclusion, delegation is an important tool for Banquet Managers, Food and Beverage Managers, and Front Office Managers to effectively manage their teams and streamline operations. By delegating responsibilities such as daily task supervision, scheduling, staffing decisions, and even some decision-making, managers can focus on higher-level tasks that contribute to the overall success of the operation.
