the theory of absolute advantage suggests that under free, unregulated trade, each nation should specialize in producing those goods it can produce most efficiently, based on naturally occurring endowments such as minerals.

Answers

The Wealth of Nations from the 18th century, economist Adam Smith introduced the idea of absolute advantage to explain how nations might profit from trade by specializing in producing and exporting the things that they can manufacture more successfully than other nations.

What is Absolute Advantage ?

Comparative advantage, which occurs when a producer has a lower opportunity cost to provide a good or service than another producer, can be contrasted with absolute advantage.

The potential advantages that a person, investor, or company forgoes by selecting one alternative over another are known as opportunity costs.

Only when each producer has an absolute advantage over the other in producing a particular good does absolute advantage result in clear profits from specialization and trade.

which of the following affords stability and predictability to the law? res ipsa loquitur stare decisis clemency certiorari

Answers

Res ipsa loquitur, stare decisis, and certiorari all afford stability and predictability to the law. Res ipsa loquitur is a Latin term meaning “the thing speaks for itself” and it is a rule of evidence used in civil suits. The rule allows for an inference of negligence on the part of the defendant.

Stare decisis is a legal principle in which a court should follow its previous decisions when the same legal issues arise. Certiorari is a type of writ (order) used by a higher court to review the decision of a lower court. Stare decisis affords stability and predictability to the law.

The concept of stare decisis means to stand by things decided. It is the principle of determining points of law according to precedent. The term is applied in the sense that courts should follow the principles they had established earlier in making judgments.

It provides that a court should follow the rules and principles made by it in a previous decision that has similar facts and issues. This will provide stability and predictability to the law. It ensures the continuity of the law and helps in maintaining stability and consistency in its application.

Other options: Res ipsa loquitur: This is a legal doctrine that allows the court to presume negligence without the plaintiff providing direct evidence of negligence. This does not afford stability and predictability to the law. Clemency is the act of mercy or leniency shown by the authorities to a person who has committed a crime.

This is not a legal doctrine and does not afford stability and predictability to the law. Certiorari is a writ or order from a higher court to a lower court or tribunal directing it to send up the record of a particular case for review. It does not afford stability and predictability to the law.

According to Goldstein, what is the proper role of politics in policing, and what is an improper role?

Criminal justice masterworks : a history of ideas about crime, law, police, and corrections

Answers

According to Herman Goldstein, the proper role of politics in policing is allocating resources to ensure adequate problem-oriented policing followed by close monitoring of police activities.

Political influences should not have a place in policing a society. According to Goldstein, policing is itself an aberration in a free society. Adding politics to the activities of the police department will decrease society's freedom and individual liberty and complicate societal relationships.

In dealing with crime and law enforcement, police should be mindful of social and physical disorders and help the government curtail such occurrences. The improper role of politics in policing occurs when policing is used by politicians to subject opposition members to oppression or harassment.

Thus, the proper role of politics in policing is to ensure that there are adequate resources for policing, monitoring the outcome of policing in the society, and not intervening in policing based on political affiliations.

Jonathan H is arrested and convicted of robbing a gas station attendant at gunpoint. He takes lottery tickets and $400 in cash.

Debra J. is arrested and convicted of robbing an Uber driver at gunpoint. She takes $450 in cash.

Debra is sentenced to 3 years of formal probation and she has to do 100 hours of community service and pay restitution to the Uber driver.

Jonathan is sentenced to 3 years in state prison.

Do you think the sentence differences are fair? If not, explain why. (5 points)

List at least four reasons why the sentences might be different. For each of your reasons, tell us why that reason should make a difference in the punishment. (20 points)

Answers

I do not believe the sentences are fair. Both defendants have committed aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, a first degree felony capable of 5-99 year prison sentences.

The sentencing may differ based on each of the defendants’ criminal history. Past criminal offenses can effect the sentencing of a defendant. The reason being, the potential for the individual to commit future crimes.
Another reason could be it would be easier to prove that the robbery of the gas station was premeditated because it’s an establishment. Premeditation can increase sentencing because the crime was planned out and there is more room for internal moral questioning regarding the crime.
The difference here in sentencing could also simply be the gender of the defendant. Throughout history women have received more lenient sentencing for crimes compared to their male counterparts. Gender shouldn’t effect the sentencing of a criminal due to the lack of logical basis. Lastly the the items that were stolen may have made a difference. Debra only stole cash totaling $450. However, Jonathan stole $400 cash and an undisclosed value of lottery tickets. With that being said, the value of the lottery tickets could’ve greatly surpassed Debra’s value total. Not to mention he stole two forms of personal property while Debra stole one. The value and amount of stolen property should effect sentencing because stolen property valuing over a specific dollar amount can determine whether or not the defendant will be charged with a felony.

None of the given statements O c. says with certainty whether the consequences of our actions will be good or bad O d. It is not the most common approach to moral reasoning used in business because of the way in which it accounts for costs and benefits

Answers

The correct answer is d) It is not the most common approach to moral reasoning used in business because of the way in which it accounts for costs and benefits.

The utilitarian approach to moral reasoning focuses on maximizing overall happiness or well-being by considering the costs and benefits of actions. It weighs the consequences of actions and aims to achieve the greatest net benefit for the greatest number of people.

In business ethics, while the utilitarian approach can be applied, it is not always the most common approach. This is because it may require weighing the costs and benefits of actions in a way that can be challenging or subjective, especially when considering factors such as individual rights, justice, and other moral values.

Other approaches, such as deontological ethics or virtue ethics, may also be employed in business ethics depending on the specific circumstances and values involved.

1. You are a member of the legislature of a large Midwestern state. Your state is running short of money to carry out some much needed programs. As a possible solution you suggest that the state government issue its own currency to people who work for it. The currency can be exchanged for dollar bills at a rate that is to be fixed by the state the first of every month. Is your idea constitutional?

2. Later in the legislative session mentioned in exercise 8, you become disenchanted with your fellow citizens when you learn that only 28 percent of those eligible to vote actually did so in the last election. Consequently, you pass a law requiring that everyone vote in every election. What arguments can you make in support of such a measure? Against?

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:

As a member of the legislature of a large Midwestern state, suggesting the issuance of a state currency as a solution to the financial challenges and funding for necessary programs raises constitutional considerations. The U.S. Constitution grants the federal government the power to coin money and regulate its value. Therefore, the idea of a state issuing its own currency might be in conflict with the Constitution.

Article I, Section 10 of the U.S. Constitution explicitly prohibits states from coining money, emitting bills of credit, or making anything other than gold and silver coin legal tender for payment of debts. The purpose of this provision is to ensure a unified national currency and prevent individual states from creating their own currencies, which could lead to economic instability and confusion in interstate commerce.

While states have the authority to regulate various aspects of their economies, the exclusive power to issue currency lies with the federal government. Therefore, issuing a state currency that can be exchanged for dollar bills may raise concerns about encroaching on the federal government's constitutional authority.

However, it's worth noting that states can adopt alternative measures to address their financial challenges, such as implementing state bonds or seeking federal assistance, within the boundaries of the Constitution.

In response to the disappointment over low voter turnout in the previous election, passing a law that mandates compulsory voting raises important considerations regarding individual rights and freedoms.

Arguments in support of compulsory voting may include:

1) Civic Duty: Mandatory voting can be seen as a civic duty and a way to foster a more engaged and participatory society. It encourages citizens to actively participate in the democratic process and make their voices heard.

2) Representation: A higher voter turnout can lead to more representative and legitimate elected officials. It ensures that the views and interests of a broader segment of the population are reflected in the decision-making process.

3) Accountability: Compulsory voting can enhance the accountability of elected officials to the electorate. With a larger and more diverse pool of voters, politicians may be compelled to address a broader range of issues and be responsive to the concerns of the electorate as a whole.

On the other hand, arguments against compulsory voting include:

1) Freedom of Choice: Forcing individuals to vote can be seen as a violation of their freedom of choice and freedom of expression. Some people may choose not to vote as a form of political protest or because they feel uninformed or disenchanted with the available candidates or political system.

2) Informed Voting: Mandatory voting may lead to a higher number of uninformed or disinterested voters. Some argue that it is better to have a smaller, but more informed, electorate making thoughtful decisions rather than compelling everyone to vote regardless of their level of knowledge or interest.

3) Practical Challenges: Implementing and enforcing compulsory voting can present logistical challenges, such as ensuring that everyone is registered, tracking compliance, and administering penalties for non-compliance. These challenges can strain resources and potentially lead to unintended consequences.

Answers

The main argument put forth by those who favor banning life sentences without parole for youth is that it is cruel and unusual punishment, and it denies young people the opportunity to reform and reintegrate into society.

Advocates argue that young people's brains are not fully developed and they should not be held to the same level of responsibility as adults. Furthermore, they argue that rehabilitation and second chances should be prioritized over punishment.

On the other hand, those who oppose implementing such bans argue that life sentences without parole are necessary to protect society from violent offenders, regardless of their age. They believe that some crimes are so heinous that they warrant the harshest punishment, and that sentencing should be based on the crime committed, not the age of the offender. Additionally, they argue that the threat of a life sentence without parole can act as a deterrent to potential offenders.

In summary, those in favor of banning life sentences without parole for youth argue that it is cruel and denies opportunities for reform, while those who oppose such bans believe it is necessary for public safety and a deterrent for crime.
