By the end of 1861, more than 25,000 men had enlisted in the Confederate army, and about 90,000 troops from Texas had enlisted to support the Confederacy throughout the whole war. A 25 percent of the Mexican population in Texas enlisted in the Union Army. However, they were motivated more by the chance to support their families with the money and supplies the Union Army would provide them than by doctrine or unionism.
