Answers

Swift provides a proposal in "A Modest Proposal" to end the Irish famine in the early 1700s.

What are the satires in "A Modest Proposal"?

Swift utilised satire in this instance to ridicule the affluent people's treatment of the impoverished people during the famine and to convey the issue of poverty in Ireland. To be clear, Swift is not advocating eating children as a feasible solution to the issue; rather, he is highlighting the problems he sees with the Irish government while illustrating the uncaring and harsh mentality of the privileged. Swift has an intense, sombre tone throughout "A Modest Proposal" as a whole.

A Modest Proposal makes its argument using a technique known as satire, which is the use of sarcasm, comedy, or exaggeration to critique the beliefs of others. Swift plainly has no true desire for the Irish people to sell their children as food, but he is attempting to make a point by utilising the absurd idea.

The pamphlets that were being distributed at the time are parodied in Swift's song "A Modest Proposal." He emphasises this by making fun of the fake modesty in the tone of many of his contemporaries' pamphlets through the use of language throughout the poem, including the term "modest" in the title. Although their approach appeared logical, their suggestions revealed a British ruling class arrogance toward their citizens in Ireland that is all too prevalent.

Swift expresses his mounting rage at the ineptitude of Irish politicians, the hypocrisy of the affluent, the oppression of the English, and the poverty and misery he seen so many Irish people experiencing in his proposal. Swift's disdain for the Irish people's seeming unwillingness to stand up for themselves is shown in "A Modest Proposal," which laments the grim predicament of an Ireland that is almost entirely exploited by England. He claims that the Irish themselves are also to blame for the level of poverty in their country, not only the English.

Answers

A strong citation is an essential component of any research paper or academic work.

It should include three main components: the author or origin of the source, the type of source, and the date of publication. Additionally, it is important to include the title of the source to give the reader a clear idea of what information is being referenced. By including all of these elements in your citation, you can ensure that your work is properly sourced and gives credit where credit is due. In summary, a strong citation should contain all four key components - author/origin, type of source, title, and date - to provide a complete and accurate reference for your readers.

Lastly, you need to include the title of the source and the date of publication. The title helps readers locate the exact resource you used, while the date provides context about the timeliness and relevance of the information. He took care to employ speech patterns that were as similar to a certain set of Southern Americans' speech patterns as possible without being too severe to make it impossible to read.

A New England Nun
by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman

In about half an hour Joe Dagget came. She heard his heavy step on the walk and rose and took off her pink and white apron. Under that was still another—white linen with a little cambric edging on the bottom; that was Louisa's company apron. She never wore it without her calico sewing apron over it unless she had a guest. She had barely folded the pink and white one with methodical haste and laid it in a table drawer when the door opened and Joe Dagget entered. He seemed to fill up the whole room. A little yellow canary that had been asleep in his green cage at the south window woke up and fluttered wildly, beating his little yellow wings against the wires. He always did so when Joe Dagget came into the room.

"Good-evening," said Louisa. She extended her hand with a kind of solemn cordiality.

"Good-evening, Louisa," returned the man, in a loud voice.

She placed a chair for him, and they sat facing each other, with the table between them. . . .

Presently, Dagget began fingering the books on the table. There was a square red autograph album and a Young Lady's Gift-Book, which had belonged to Louisa's mother. He took them up one after the other and opened them; then laid them down again, the album on the Gift-Book.

Louisa kept eyeing them with mild uneasiness. Finally she rose and changed the position of the books, putting the album underneath. That was the way they had been arranged in the first place.

Dagget gave an awkward little laugh. "Now what difference did it make which book was on top?" he said.

Louisa looked at him with a deprecating smile. "I always keep them that way," she murmured.

"You do beat everything," said Dagget, trying to laugh again. His large face was flushed.

Adapted from Mary E. Wilkins Freeman's "A New England Nun," 1899.

A.)He is excited to read Louisa’s books.

You are offered a 30-year mortgage loan with $500,000 principal amount and $2,400 monthly payments toward principal and interest. Compute the corresponding annual interest rate for this loan. Hint: write down the table of cash flows and compute the internal rate of return using a numerical solver.

Answers

The corresponding annual interest rate for the 30-year mortgage loan with a $500,000 principal amount and $2,400 monthly payments toward principal and interest is approximately 3.68%.

To compute the annual interest rate for the given mortgage loan, we need to use the concept of internal rate of return (IRR). The IRR is the annualized rate of return that makes the net present value (NPV) of cash flows equal to zero.

In this case, we can construct a table of cash flows for the 30-year period, with monthly payments of $2,400. The principal amount of $500,000 remains constant throughout the loan term. By solving for the IRR using a numerical solver, we can determine the corresponding annual interest rate.

The IRR represents the interest rate at which the monthly payments, combined with the principal amount, will equate to a net present value of zero. The solver iteratively calculates the IRR by adjusting the interest rate until the NPV is zero.

After performing the calculations, the computed IRR for this mortgage loan is approximately 3.68%. This indicates that the loan carries an annual interest rate of around 3.68%.

hey ! i’m writing an essay for english and i want to know other transition words to start a conclusion paragraph besides “in conclusion”. anything helps, thanks!

Answers

The best way to start a conclusion paragraph is by restating your thesis.(hope this helps)
This might not be the best answer and is most likely incorrect, but often times I don’t include “transition words” necessarily.

Sometimes when I start a conclusion paragraph with a transition phrase, I find myself repeating word-for-word sentences I already used (like topic sentences from body paragraphs) instead of actually writing something that brings the essay together. Instead of writing “in conclusion, the theme of the story is _ because x, y, and z” I would put something like “xyz shows how the theme of _ is prevalent in _. The characters face challenges like x, that follow them through the story into yz.”

I hope this made sense. I think transition words can make it harder for an essay to “flow” and sound cookie-cutter-ish in my opinion. But I’m not super knowledgeable at writing essays so I don’t know how helpful my advice will be.

PLEASEEEE HELP!

Last week, a visitor came to sing to our class. He was wearing a pirate costume. In a grand voice, he sang out "I am a Pirate King!" The song is from the musical "Pirates of Penzance." It sounded great.
After class, I listened to the song again online. Our teacher said our school will perform the show in the spring. At first, I was ,begin underline, afraid, end underline, about auditioning for the play. But now that I know this song, I really want to be the Pirate King!
Question
Tayron wants to replace ,begin emphasis, afraid, end emphasis, with a word that is more precise.

Which word should he use?
Answer options with 4 options
1.
alarmed
2.
distressed
3.
reluctant
4.
worried

Answers

reluctant sounds just right
4. Worried
“At first, I was about auditioning for the play.”
This is grammatically correct. Someone is often “worried about (insert issue)”.

Reluctant is incorrect, the sentence would have to be “I was reluctant TO AUDITION for the play.” It does not make sense without these changes.

Alarmed doesn’t fit as well as the other options. Tayron knows auditions are in the spring as mentioned.

Distressed is a strong word, typically signaling deep emotional turmoil. It does not appear to be the more precise word to replace ‘afraid’. Distressed can be used to describe the state of something as well as in phrases such as: “distressed by”, “feeling distressed”, or “distressed about”.

In this case, I think worried is the word able to replace afraid most precisely.

What is the relationship between reason and faith, according to Aquinas?

Reason is subservient to faith.
Faith is subservient to reason.
Faith and reason are equal.
Faith and reason contradict.

Answers

Answer:

Reason is subservient to faith.

Explanation:

According to Aquinas,  Reason comprises of things that we know from what we have seen and what we think. From reason we know that God exists. Reason does not require a revelation from God for us to know.

Faith comprises of things that we know from God revelation to us. The revelation can be from the bible or what is being taught in the church. An example of faith is that we know that Jesus died for us so that we would have eternal life.

Faith cannot be known from reason alone but faith builds  on what we know (i.e. reason). Hence Reason is subservient to faith.

Faith and truth are similar and there should be no difference between what faith and reason tells us.

Explain what Dr. King means by "America has been something of a schizophrenic personality, tragically divided against herself".

Answers

Dr. King means that America has a divided and contradictory nature, struggling with internal conflicts and contradictions.

When Dr. King refers to America as having a "schizophrenic personality" and being "tragically divided against herself," he is highlighting the deep-rooted divisions and contradictions within the country. He suggests that America grapples with conflicting values, ideals, and actions that undermine its unity and progress.

The term "schizophrenic personality" is used metaphorically to describe a nation that exhibits inconsistent and contradictory behavior. Just as individuals with schizophrenia experience a fragmented sense of self and conflicting thoughts, America, according to Dr. King, displays a similar internal division.

Dr. King's use of the word "tragic" emphasizes the severity and unfortunate consequences of this division. He recognizes the immense potential of America, but laments how its internal conflicts hinder its ability to fulfill that potential.

This division can be seen in various aspects of American society, such as racial segregation, economic disparities, and political polarization. Dr. King, as a civil rights leader, witnessed firsthand the deep racial divisions and inequalities that plagued the country during his time. He believed that these divisions contradicted America's professed ideals of equality, justice, and freedom.

Furthermore, Dr. King's use of the phrase "divided against herself" suggests that the internal conflicts and divisions within America are self-inflicted. It implies that the nation's divisions are not external forces imposing themselves but rather a result of its own internal struggles and contradictions.

Overall, Dr. King's statement highlights the need for America to confront and reconcile its internal divisions in order to truly live up to its ideals and achieve unity and progress. By acknowledging its contradictory nature and working towards healing and unity, America can overcome its "schizophrenic" personality and fulfill its promise as a just and inclusive society.
