Read the passage below (from Gertrude Stein's Three Lives) with accuracy and fluency. Discuss any unfamiliar words from the passage and what strategies you used to understand them.

Lena?s German voice when she knocked and called the family in the morning was as awakening, as soothing, and as appealing, as a delicate soft breeze in midday, summer. She stood in the hallway every morning a long time in her unexpectant and unsuffering German patience calling to the young ones to get up. She would call and wait a long time and then call again, always even, gentle, patient, while the young ones fell back often into that precious, tense, last bit of sleeping that gives a strength of joyous vigor in the young, over them that have come to the readiness of middle age, in their awakening.

We weare no Cloaths, have many Gods,

You are Barbarians, Pagans wild,

Your Land's the Wildernesse.

Who are the “Pagans” described in the last lines in the excerpt above?

non-Christians
European colonists
Narragansett Indians
murderers

Answers

The "Pagans" described in the last lines of the excerpt are most likely the European colonists.

The lines imply that the speaker, likely a Native American or member of a indigenous tribe, sees the colonists as barbarians and wild due to their lack of clothing and the presence of multiple gods in their belief systems. The phrase "Your Land's the Wildernesse" suggests that the speaker views the colonists' arrival and settlement as transforming the once untamed wilderness into a less desirable state.

The mention of "sinnes" being less in the speaker's group could be interpreted as a critique of the colonists' moral conduct, possibly referencing their violent actions or mistreatment of the native population. It's important to note that this perspective is from the viewpoint of the speaker and does not reflect a universally accepted truth.

Given the historical context of European colonization in North America, where indigenous peoples encountered unfamiliar customs and beliefs brought by European settlers, it is likely that the "Pagans" referred to here are the European colonists themselves.

Who invented the hamburger? Many different cultures, towns, and restaurants have tried to "steak" the claim of creating the first mouth-watering burger; but the truth is, it developed with small changes over time. Some historians think the dish is inspired by Genghis Khan and his hungry hoard of Mongolians. They took meat with them into battle, hidden under their saddles, and ate the flattened steaks afterward ¾ raw. When the Mongols invaded Moscow in the thirteenth century, the Russians adapted the idea, adding spices and onions. The dish eventually made its way from Russia to the port town of Hamburg, Germany, where it was adapted further. In the eighteenth century, Germans began asking for their steak "Hamburg style," which meant ground, seasoned meat, shaped into patties, and quickly grilled. The hamburger reached America in the nineteenth century when sailors and immigrants travelling from Germany brought the dish with them. In the 1920's, the burger finally met its mate: the bun. Many American restaurants began featuring it on their menus, each one claiming to be the "home of the hamburger." These small changes, made over centuries, contributed to one of the most popular foods in the world: the mighty hamburger. Which of these best states the main idea?

Which two words or phrases best convey the concerned tone of the passage? WORDS ARE IN BRACKETS
The Honeybee
It is seldom noticed in a garden, and if it is, people run for cover. Few poems are written about it, and its hairy figure and bulbous eyes will probably not be painted in watercolors on a greeting card. Yet, without this insect, life on the entire planet could be threatened. That is what scientists are saying about the {{disappearing}} honeybee.
The honeybee makes honey, of course. Worker bees are active foragers, gathering nectar and pollen from flowers to produce the honey the hive needs for survival. In the course of their work, honeybees track pollen from flower to flower, which in turn, pollinates the flower. Pollinated flowers of fruit and vegetable plants produce fruits and vegetables. Flowers of such plants that do not get pollinated do not grow any produce. The American honeybee seems to be disappearing at {{alarming rates}} and is now endangered. This is a big problem for farmers. Without bees to pollinate their plants, farmers have no crops. Without crops, people have no food.
Honeybee populations around the globe are {{dwindling}} due to natural habitat destruction and pesticides. But a natural threat to the bees are the tracheal mite and the Varroa mite, two culprits that invaded the United States in the mid-1980s and have now spread to most states. These mites are developing resistance to the one insecticide that beekeepers have been able to use against it. The honeybee decline is such a problem that states are renting their honeybee colonies to farmers in affected states, like the apple growers in Michigan.
Researchers are working to develop a new mitocide that will effectively eliminate the menacing mites. Another solution that is equally as frightening as the poison-resistant mites is to develop a new strain of bee that can resist the mites. This is the stuff that horror movies are made of. People, however, around the globe are becoming aware of the {{threat}} and are taking positive steps to save the bees. Some are taking up beekeeping, others are {{raising awareness}} and raising money, like Mikaila Ulmer. Mikaila began a project to save the bees when she was only four years old. The project has since turned into a money-making family business.

Answers

Even when location, soil, pest control, and irrigation are optimal, farmers will not produce crops if there are no honey bees to pollinate them.

What reason caused number of honeybees decline in the United States?

Factors that contribute to bee decline include habitat loss, improper apiary management, pesticides, climate change, pests and pathogens, competition among introduced and native bee species, and poor nutrition.

Which will decline the honey bee colonies?

“Urbanization, changes in the way we live and increased use of herbicides, insecticides and pesticides have all contributed to loss of bees,” Johnson said. Pollinator decline is a big, complicated problem. But actually, it's by no means unsolvable.

Why are similes hard?

Explanation:

Once you understand what is counts as a simile and what counts as a metaphor it would become more easier.

A simile is a comparison of at least two things using the words "like" or "as".

For example, the usage of a simile can include:

Tom is like a mountain goat, leaping from one rock to another.

Note the comparison of Tom to a mountain goat, and the usage of "like", or being similar too.

Another example can be:

James was as brave as a lion, strong as a bear, leapt like a gazelle, and as smart as Einstein.

Note the comparison of James to many different animals as well as a famous person.

The next thing that you should be learning is Metaphor, which is kind of related to similes.

Metaphors is a comparison, but without using the words "like" or "as"

For example, the usage of a metaphor can include:

Her long hair flowed down like a river.

While "like" or "as" was not used, her hair was compared to a river.

When you understand this concept it would be very very useful, especially when writing essays. Most of the time you may need to compare things, such as products, ideas/beliefs, and even different civilizations within a time period (specifically in history class). Understanding how to use similes & metaphors can help enhance your writing.

The textbook highlights four distinct styles of parenting: authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved. Conduct an Internet search to broaden your understanding of these styles. Write a short essay (500-750 words) in which you: First, define each style. Then, explore each style's effect on the socioemotional development of a 10-year-old child.

Answers

Answer:

Authoritarian = you deny the child any saying or rights.

Authoritative = you make clear to the child that your opinion overrules.

Permissive = you work on a more democratic level with your child.

Uninvolved = you leave everything up to the child.

Explanation:

Authoritarian parenting is, hopefully, outdated because it doesn´t educate the child in any way and leaves it in a submissive role.

Authoritative parenting leaves more freedom for the child to express his/her opinion, but it probably leads to the child feeling not being taken serious.

Permissive parenting is democratic and it shows the child that she/he is equally treated and in no way inferior to the adult. This has, however, also some possible negative side-effects, because it can lead a child to do whatever it feels like to do.

Uninvolved parenting is very practical because it saves the parents of a lot of work. Nevertheless, it leads to children who are not corrected in any way and therefore end up in society, in general, as conflictive persons.

Diary entry on trip to Kerala

Answers

Date: 3 March 2023

Today, I went on a trip to Kerala, the southernmost state of India, with my family. It was a long-awaited trip, and we were all excited to explore the state's natural beauty and culture. We landed at Cochin International Airport in the morning, and from there, we drove to our hotel in Munnar, a hill station in the Western Ghats.

The journey to Munnar was breathtaking, with lush green tea gardens and misty mountains surrounding us on all sides. We reached our hotel by midday, and after some rest and lunch, we went out to explore the town. We visited the Tea Museum and learned about the history of tea production in the region. The aroma of fresh tea leaves filled the museum, and we even got to taste some delicious tea.

In the evening, we went on a short trek to a nearby waterfall. The cool breeze and the sound of water falling from a height were incredibly refreshing. We clicked some pictures and spent some time admiring the beauty of nature.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Eravikulam National Park, home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, and also take a ride on the famous houseboats in Alleppey. Kerala is indeed God's own country, and I cannot wait to explore more of it.

Moral value therefore in our youth is what cannot be overemphasized in the youths. Youths of any country today are the leaders of tomorrow, as a result, there is the need to inculcate good moral in them I as the world has been bedevilled with a lot of immorality. Immorality is most common in our youths and if this menace is not curbed, it will further create anarchy in our environments and to its inhabitants. The need therefore to inculcate good moral value in our youths is a responsibility of not only the parents but the community as a whole.

Morality is what people look out for in every youth and every morally upright youth is a source of pride to his parents. Charity they say begins at home, and youth must be properly disciplined from childhood by his parents. The parents of such a child have little or nothing to worry about when he becomes a youth.

Another institution that needs to inculcate moral values in the youth is the community. The upbringing of a child in the African society is the total responsibility of the entire community members. The adults discipline a child with love when he misbehaves. More so, the government as in the case of Nigeria has discovered that youth without. ut moral will constitute a nuisance to the community. This we can see with the case of terrorism facing our nation the recent times. Thousands of lives have been lost and properties destroyed.

Furthermore, the government has seen that the most effective means of inculcating moral value in the. youth should start from the grass root. This has made the government introduce civic education into the school curriculum from primary education to tertiary. This is aimed at curbing the menace of terrorism, cultism, drug addiction, among others in the youth.

Besides, Religious groups and non-governmental organizations have seen the need to inculcate good moral values in the youth as a result of immorality which has taken over our society. Sermons have been preached and seminars organized to help advise the youth to dissociate themselves from groups that will not add positive values to their lives.

Principally, the role of the school precisely teachers and guidance and counselling department in instilling good moral value in the youth cannot be overlooked. Since youth spend more time at schools, they should be properly monitored so that they do not join bad peers. Youths should be properly disciplined by the school authorities and reported to the appropriate authorities for rehabilitation if found to have belonged to any such bad group.

Finally, failure to pay attention to the timing of youths has been the major cause of upheavals in our country. Our I youths should be engaged by our government and be made productive. A morally upright youth, therefore, is an asset to the nation at large.

theme of how to build a fire

London employs irony to emphasize and further illustrate his existential topic. The man goes across the dangerous terrain of the Yukon with "keenly watchful" attention (120). Ironically, the guy "falls through the ice" at a place where there are no "treacherous signs," despite the fact that he is continuously on the lookout for clues to the hidden dangers he desires to avoid (Perry 227). After meticulously lighting a fire, the guy learns even more about the arbitrary and uncaring character of the cosmos when the fire is hilariously extinguished by snow falling just as he is ready to start defrosting his frozen feet. Even with all of his knowledge, King Hendricks finds it ironic that "[the man] is still a helpless prey to natural powers and natural forces" (22). Further pointing out the irony, Hendricks writes, "the dog, surviving just by instinct, without mittens, without earflaps, without a coat, without lunch, and without a fire, survived himself while the man could not survive in the Artic [sic] temperature of 75 degrees below zero" (22). The reader must not be misled by the dog's presence as the man's traveling companion in order to maintain the existential theme of man being alone in an indifferent universe; instead, the reader must recognize the dog for what it truly is—another manifestation of the environment's apathy and indifference. The dog cannot be viewed as a kin who shares the protagonist's lonely, miserable existence since it is not a sentient entity like man and hence cannot be considered a kindred spirit. London draws the reader's attention to the merciless indifference of nature and, in turn, the existential topic of man living alone in an unpredictable and destructive environment by adding irony to the story's key elements.

Someone had stolen it during the night. I can't even describe how I felt at that moment. My heart sank to the pit of my stomach and I felt like crying.

All the hard work I had done to save that money was gone in an instant. I felt violated and helpless like there was nothing I could do to make things right. It's not just about the money, either. It's about trust. I feel like I can't trust anyone anymore.

Who could have done this to me? Was it someone I know? Was it a stranger? I feel like everyone is a suspect now, and that's a terrible feeling. I'm also worried about the future. How am I going to pay for the things I need now that my money is gone?

Will I be able to make rent this month? Will I have enough to buy food? These are all questions that are racing through my mind right now. I just can't believe this happened to me. It feels like a nightmare that I can't wake up from. I don't know what I'm going to do, but I know that I can't let this defeat me.
