I found my bridge holding bravely in place against the swollen torrent, crossed it and beat my way around pools and logs and through two hours of tangle back to the moraine on the north side of the outlet,—a wet, weary battle but not without enjoyment. The smell of the washed ground and vegetation made every breath a pleasure, and I found Calypso borealis1, the first I had seen on this side of the continent, one of my darlings, worth any amount of hardship; and I saw one of my Douglas squirrels on the margin of the grassy pool. The drip of the rain on the various leaves was pleasant to hear. More especially marked were the flat low-toned bumps and splashes of large drops from the trees on the broad horizontal leaves of Echinopanax horridum2, like the drumming of thundershower drops on veratrum and palm leaves, while the mosses were indescribably beautiful, so fresh, so bright, so cheerily green, and all so low and calm and silent, however heavy and wild the wind and the rain blowing and pouring above them. Surely never a particle of dust has touched leaf or crown of all these blessed mosses; and how bright were the red rims of the cladonia cups beside them, and the fruit of the dwarf cornel! And the wet berries, Nature's precious jewelry, how beautiful they were!—huckleberries with pale bloom and a crystal drop on each; red and yellow salmon-berries, with clusters of smaller drops; and the glittering, berry-like raindrops adorning the interlacing arches of bent grasses and sedges around the edges of the pools, every drop a mirror with all the landscape in it. pattern. In rural America, the traditional quilting bee gave friends and neighbors a

Public places can become art spaces. Artists on New York’s Lower East Side
have transformed an old gas station into a gallery, sculpture garden, and performance
space. They turn abandoned cars and other urban debris into a community work of

The German artist Kurt Schwitters (1887–1948) used discarded objects to create
a style of art he called Rubbish. Schwitters walked the streets collecting torn pieces

you’re an Earth Artist. You don’t need paint or paper to make art: in fact, Earth Artist
Andy Goldsworthy started out with a simple rule: he would work outside and only use

A man with white hair, a white beard, and a Scottish accent rubs his freezing
hands together before picking up a piece of icicle, dipping it in snow and then in
water, and holding it against another bit of ice. Then he waits patiently until the two
pieces freeze together.
Andy Goldsworthy is being filmed in action for the documentary Rivers and Tides.
The curving line of ice he’s working on looks as if it weaves through and around a
point of stone. If a piece of icicle doesn’t fit quite right, he chews the end until it does.
His hands are cold and dirty, but he can’t feel the ice properly with gloves on. “It’s
hard going and it’s hard on the hands. . . . All effort is going into trying to make
something that is effortless,” he says.
Finally, the Sun rises and shines through the curving ice; it seems to glow. “I never
had any idea that would happen!” Goldsworthy says with delight, going on to point
out that “the very thing that brings the work to life is the thing that will cause its
death.” The ice will melt in the sunlight, and the sculpture will be gone.
