What is imperialism?

Imperialism is the state policy, practice, or advocacy of extending power and dominion, especially by direct territorial acquisition or by gaining political and economic control of other areas, often through employing hard power economic and military power but also soft power cultural and diplomatic power. While related to the concepts of colonialism and empire, imperialism is a distinct concept that can apply to other forms of expansion and many forms of government.

The word “imperialism” was originally coined in the 19th century to decry Napoleon’s despotic militarism and became common in the current sense in Great Britain during the 1870s, when it was used with a negative connotation. By the end of the 19th century it was being used to describe the behavior of empires at all times and place.

Hannah Arendt and Joseph Schumpeter defined imperialism as expansion for the sake of expansion.

LSAT questions about principles (also called “propositions” or “generalizations”) can take several forms: Identify the principle: The passage is an argument or a situation, and the principle is in the choices.

The principle must be independently meaningful; i.e., it must make sense as an independent statement. It should be reasonable to claim that the reasoning under consideration is committed to this principle or one that is very similar to it.

At its core, an argument consists of a conclusion and one or more premises, or claims. The conclusion is what the communicator wants his or her audience to accept, and the premises are the reasons for believing the conclusion to be true.

Alternatively, a principle question may ask you to pick an answer that most accurately expresses a particular action's underlying or supporting principle.

Answer:

Hie..! Here's the answer

Egypt, country located in the northeastern corner of Africa. Egypt’s heartland, the Nile River valley and delta, was the home of one of the principal civilizations of the ancient Middle East and, like Mesopotamia farther east, was the site of one of the world’s earliest urban and literate societies. Pharaonic Egypt thrived for some 3,000 years through a series of native dynasties that were interspersed with brief periods of foreign rule. After Alexander the Great conquered the region in 323 BCE, urban Egypt became an integral part of the Hellenistic world. Under the Greek Ptolemaic dynasty, an advanced literate society thrived in the city of Alexandria, but what is now Egypt was conquered by the Romans in 30 BCE. It remained part of the Roman Republic and Empire and then part of Rome’s successor state, the Byzantine Empire, until its conquest by Arab Muslim armies in 639–642 CE.

Until the Muslim conquest, great continuity had typified Egyptian rural life. Despite the incongruent ethnicity of successive ruling groups and the cosmopolitan nature of Egypt’s larger urban centres, the language and culture of the rural, agrarian masses—whose lives were largely measured by the annual rise and fall of the Nile River, with its annual inundation—had changed only marginally throughout the centuries. Following the conquests, both urban and rural culture began to adopt elements of Arab culture, and an Arabic vernacular eventually replaced the Egyptian language as the common means of spoken discourse. Moreover, since that time, Egypt’s history has been part of the broader Islamic world, and though Egyptians continued to be ruled by foreign elite—whether Arab, Kurdish, Circassian, or Turkish—the country’s cultural milieu remained predominantly Arab.

How did women’s involvement in the Progressive movement lead to changes made to the Constitution? WILL GIVE BRAINLIEST

Answers

Answer:

Looking at women activists of the Progressive Era can provide insights into both the problems of the period and the emerging role of women in public life. As the country moved into the twentieth century, society had to confront the effects of industrialization, the growing concentration of economic power, urbanization, and a great wave of immigration. These dramatic changes produced fears that traditional values were being undermined by the influence of wealth at the top and radicalism at the bottom. The desire to modify the harsher aspects of industrialization and to make government more responsive to the people resulted in the Progressive Movement. The reform impulse began in the late 19th century, gained momentum when Theodore Roosevelt became president in 1901, and continued through Woodrow Wilson’s presidency.

The atmosphere of reform, combined with a broader job market and already changing lifestyles, gave rise to a new women’s movement. The growth of big business opened new fields for women, such as saleswoman and clerk, as well as bringing more women into the factory system. Mass production introduced household conveniences, which allowed more leisure time for middle class women. Educational opportunities expanded and a new generation of college graduates sought fulfillment in the world outside the home.

However, women often found their efforts thwarted by a male-dominated society and a Victorian view of the female role. In most states, women could not vote, and in some states married women could not sign contracts without the consent of their husbands. As women tried to address the social problems of the day, they had to contend with the rather entrenched view that women were intellectually and emotionally inferior to men. The following sections depict how women organized to support social reform and to redefine the role of women at the last turn of the century.

Based on information in the article, which best describes the difference between the child labor rates in Nepal and Mongolia?

A.Child labor rates have increased in Mongolia since 1990, but decreased in Nepal since 1990.

B.Child labor rates have increased in Mongolia since 1990, but stayed the same in Nepal since 1990.

C.Child labor rates have increased in Nepal since 1990, but decreased in Mongolia since 1990.

D.Child labor rates have increased in Nepal since 1990, but stayed the same in Mongolia since 1990.

In 2000, there were 127 million children working in Asia. By 2004, that number had fallen to 122 million. Officials are pleased that child labor rates have dropped, but they say the decline isn't happening fast enough.

Those numbers came from a recent report from the International Labor Organization (ILO). The report focused on South Asia, which includes Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and other nations. It concluded that despite the decrease in the number of working children ages five to 14, South Asia remains a child labor hot spot.

The report discussed child labor in several nations and identified Nepal as one of the worst offenders. As of 2004, almost 40 percent of Nepalese children aged 10 to 14 were working. Many continue to do strenuous physical labor in mines, quarries, and carpet factories. Still, even in Nepal, child labor rates are declining; they had been near 50 percent in 1990.

The Philippines has improved, but problems remain in some industries. Many Filipino children still work in fireworks production, deep-sea fishing, and mining. The country has a national action plan to change this.

"The [anti-child labor] laws are all there," said Filipino Undersecretary of Labor and Employment Manuel G. Imson. Imson says that the government is working with the police to enforce these laws.

In some cases, child labor has emerged where it was previously nonexistent. There were few or no child laborers in Mongolia until 1990; today, up to 10,000 children there work in gold, coal, and mineral mines. Kh. Ganbaatar, executive director of the Mongolian Employers' Federation, blames the problem on economic changes as well as on natural disasters. Several years ago, winter storms killed millions of livestock. This made it harder for families to maintain their traditional herding way of life. Many of these families were forced to send their children to work.

In fact, child labor often develops because area families cannot make ends meet and need extra income. In other cases, parents want to send their children to school but cannot afford the related fees.

"A large number of working poor means that we have a large number of people who are unable to support children [going] to school," said Panudda Boonpala, senior child labor specialist at the ILO.

In August, government representatives from nearly 40 countries as well as workers' and employers' organizations attended an ILO conference. Topics on their agenda included migration, competitiveness, productivity, and youth employment (child labor). At a session on youth employment, participants watched a video that showed children working at a gold mine in Mongolia.

The ILO says that it will try to end some of the worst forms of child labor within 10 years. Its officials point out that attitudes about working children have changed in Asia. This is contributing to the reduction in child labor rates.

"I think 10 years ago there was lots of denial," Panudda said. Still, she said, nations will not be able to end child labor unless they are willing to put a lot of effort and funding into the fight against it.

List and describe three effects that the American Revolution had upon economic relationships in the United States.

Answers

American’s weak economy, lack of government
The American Revolution had a number of significant effects on economic relationships in the United States. Some of the key effects include:

1. The Revolution led to the creation of a new, independent American economy. Prior to the Revolution, the American colonies were economically dependent on Great Britain and other European powers. However, the Revolution allowed the newly formed United States to establish its own economy, with its own industries, trade relationships, and economic policies. This new American economy was built on principles of free trade and individual enterprise, and it laid the foundations for the country's future growth and prosperity.

2. The Revolution also led to changes in the agricultural sector. Prior to the Revolution, the American colonies relied heavily on agriculture, and most farmers were small, independent landowners. However, the Revolution disrupted this traditional agricultural system, as many farmers were forced to sell their land to pay off war debts. This led to the rise of large-scale, plantation-style agriculture, which relied on enslaved labor and was focused on exporting crops such as cotton, tobacco, and sugar.

3. The Revolution also led to changes in trade and commerce. Prior to the Revolution, the American colonies were subject to British trade policies, which favored British interests over those of the colonies. However, the Revolution allowed the United States to establish its own trade policies, which were focused on encouraging free trade and expanding American commerce. This led to the growth of American industries such as shipbuilding and manufacturing, and it helped to lay the foundations for the country's future economic growth

NO LAWS BUT WHAT I PLEASE."

Read the passage. What idea is the author trying to prove to the colonists?
A Colonists may not agree with him, but the king has the right to rule.
B Colonists should request that the king allow them representation.
C The king is violating the natural rights of the colonists.
D The king knows best how to govern the colonie

Answers

Answer: C. The king is violating the natural rights of the colonists.

Explanation:

Paine argues that placing the powers of governing solely in the hands of the king, who is an enemy of liberty, is unjust. By highlighting the king's authority to dictate laws without the consent or input of the colonists, Paine suggests that the king is violating the natural rights of the colonists to participate in their own governance. This supports the broader theme in Paine's pamphlet, Common Sense, which advocates for the idea of independence from British rule and the establishment of self-governance in the American colonies.

Is it ethical for companies to advertise to children so heavily? Why or why not?
Is it ethical for companies to use ads that ask people to buy things that are unhealthy? Why or why not?
Is it ethical for companies to use images that are intended to manipulate the audience into thinking a luxury is necessary? Why or why not?

Answers

i’d say all are ethical it’s just they’re way of selling products. 1. advertising to children so heavily is a way of getting parents to buy the product, if a child is begging a parent for some product they seen on television most likely they will. 2. most people like unhealthy things/ junk food (i’m guessing this is about food) the more you see an advertisement about a restaurant and the food looks good the more you’re going to want to eat there. 3. manipulating audiences is a good way of selling products, doesn’t matter if it’s pretty people just buy luxury items to brag how much it was or that they have the item.

It is not ethical for companies to advertise to children so heavily. The American Academy of Pediatrics claims that too much exposure to marketing might encourage kids to smoke, drink, and eat poorly, which frequently results in obesity. Children are told by the advertising that they must have certain things in order to be happy and acceptable.

Why is advertising to children particularly troubling to ethicists?

Constantly exposing young children to complex marketing content may cause them to develop negative societal ideals like consumerism and materialism.

Children have little to no money of their own and must convince their parents to purchase things on their behalf, hence advertising to kids is unethical. Companies employ a "nag and complain" technique that fosters resentment between parents and children rather than directly marketing to parents.

Akhenaten was not liked by the people of Egypt during his reign as pharaoh because he forced them to change their religion from polytheistic to monotheistic. Describe the changes that he tried to make. Based on what you know about Egyptian religion, why do you think this would have been such a large change?

Before the fifth year of his reign, he was known as Amenhotep IV (Ancient Egyptian: jmn-ḥtp, meaning "Amun is satisfied", Hellenized as Amenophis IV).

Atenism

Akhenaten is noted for abandoning Egypt's traditional polytheistic religion and introducing Atenism, worship centered on Aten. The views of Egyptologists differ whether Atenism should be considered as absolute monotheism, or whether it was monolatry, syncretism, or henotheism.[12][13] This culture shift away from traditional religion was not widely accepted. After his death, Akhenaten's monuments were dismantled and hidden, his statues were destroyed, and his name excluded from lists of rulers compiled by later pharaohs.[14] Traditional religious practice was gradually restored, notably under his close successor Tutankhamun, who changed his name from Tutankhaten early in his reign.[15] When some dozen years later rulers without clear rights of succession from the Eighteenth Dynasty founded a new dynasty, they discredited Akhenaten and his immediate successors, referring to Akhenaten himself as "the enemy" or "that criminal" in archival records.[16][17]

Akhenaten was all but lost to history until the late 19th century discovery of Amarna, or Akhetaten, the new capital city he built for the worship of Aten.[18] Furthermore, in 1907, a mummy that could be Akhenaten's was unearthed from the tomb KV55 in the Valley of the Kings by Edward R. Ayrton. Genetic testing has determined that the man buried in KV55 was Tutankhamun's father,[19] but its identification as Akhenaten has since been questioned.[6][7][20][21][22]

Akhenaten's rediscovery and Flinders Petrie's early excavations at Amarna sparked great public interest in the pharaoh and his queen Nefertiti. He has been described as "enigmatic", "mysterious", "revolutionary", "the greatest idealist of the world", and "the first individual in history", but also as a "heretic", "fanatic", "possibly insane", and "mad".[12][23][24][25][26] The interest comes from his connection with Tutankhamun, the unique style and high quality of the pictorial arts he patronized, and ongoing interest in the religion he attempted to establish.

After___Canada began to gain its independence from Great Britain.

A. World War I
B. The American revolution
C. The Vietnam war
D. World War II

Answers

Answer: B. The American revolution

Explanation: After the American revolution, which took place from 1775 to 1783, Canada began to gain its independence from Great Britain.  In fact it was in 1867, when the Province of Canada united with Nova Scotia, two other British colonies, formed their own self-governing body.

The American revolution served as an inspiration for Canadian political leaders and played a pivotal role in shaping Canada's journey towards independence from Great Britain because it created a sense of possibility and fueled the aspirations of Canadians to govern themselves.

The American revolution resulted in the Thirteen Colonies (which later became the United States) breaking away from British rule. The successful revolution had a significant impact on Canada's path to independence.

During the American revolution, many British loyalists fled to Canada, particularly to the provinces of Nova Scotia, Quebec, and Ontario. These loyalists, who remained loyal to the British crown, played a crucial role in shaping Canada's identity and political landscape.

In summary, following the American revolution, there was a greater desire among Canadians for more autonomy and self-governance. This desire for independence gained momentum in the early 19th century, leading to the establishment of responsible government in Canada. Responsible government allowed elected representatives to have more control over local affairs, gradually reducing British influence.
