Which two details are most important to include in a summary of the excerpt in gullivers travels

Answers

Answer: This excerpt is first person point of view. We know this because of the personal pronouns that are used throughout it (I, me, my, etc.). If it was second or third person, pronouns like he, she, it, they, etc. would be used in place of the personal ones. We would also see a slightly different version of the scene.

Explanation: Since this is first person, it is told from the giant's perspective. If it was told from a different point of view, it would most likely be a narrator that is not the giant and just a by-stander.

Nights and Dragons—
From the memoir of author Abigail Prynne

1
I sit at my desk listening to thunder growl outside my window. Flashes of light burst through the darkness, and wind races past my window. The thrilling combination of sight and sound conjures up visions of dragons roaring proudly, breathing fire, and soaring across the midnight sky. Dragons first fascinated me when I was a little girl. They have followed me ever since. The magnificent creatures appeared in storybooks I read in the library, paintings I saw in museums, movies I watched in the theater, and the dreams I had in my sleep. By the time I was thirteen, one question consumed me. I wanted to know if dragons ever existed, so I set out on a quest for facts.
2
As I started my research, I discovered many skeptics. Scientists presented evidence to show why dragons could not—and did not—exist. They explained that it would be impossible for dragons to fly because they would be too big. They laughed at the idea of dragons breathing fire. They pointed out that no other animal has ever done this. They said that if dragons had lived, someone would have found remains somewhere in the world. No bones about it, there were plenty of logical explanations. It would have been easy for me to accept that the only place dragons ever existed was in the imaginations of those who believed.
3
I could have given up, but I thought about my grandmother. She always told me that "people who believe that science is the answer to everything are missing out on everything else." With her words in mind, I searched some more. There were many facts that hinted that dragons may not be fictional. I noticed that cultures across the world all described dragons in similar ways. This was odd because they had no way to communicate with each other. I found dragons mentioned in more than just stories. They appeared in old legal papers, in the travel logs of Marco Polo, and in the Bible. I saw that the Chinese calendar uses a different animal each year. Dragons are included along with eleven real animals. I began to believe it was a real possibility that all of these people were talking about a creature that actually existed.
4
With renewed hope that there was some truth to the legends, I looked for new research. I found that some experts disagreed with popular arguments against dragons. They suggested that a dragon could have four stomachs like a cow. If it created stomach gases like birds, it might create enough to lift itself off the ground. This would give it the ability to fly. If it forced out air when diving toward the earth, it might release gases which could ignite into flame. When the animal died, the stomachs would release strong acids that would dissolve its dead body over time. Biologists backed up these ideas with sketches and models based on known animals. Not everyone agreed with these ideas, but many of the things we accept about dinosaurs and other extinct species started the same way.
5
I doubt we will ever truly know whether dragons existed. There may always be two sides to the fiery debate. Some will say the stories come from active imaginations. Some will believe with all their hearts that the legendary creatures roamed our ancient world. I don't know for certain which side to believe, but the sound and fury of a night like this makes me smile. It rekindles my childhood dreams and keeps the exciting possibility alive.

Which best states the main idea of the text?

I have found no proof that dragons ever existed.

I have always wondered if dragons existed, and I hope they did.

PROJECT: FIGURES OF SPEECH
HELPPPPPP
Here is your goal for this assignment:

Identify figures of speech in context

Figurative language describes a series of writing tools that includes a variety of rhetorical devices such as figures of speech, imagery, and sound elements. This lesson will focus on the tools used for figure of speech.

Figure of Speech
A figure of speech is when a word or phrase has meaning beyond the literal dictionary definition. Figures of speech will bring color and interest to a piece of writing. A well-placed figure of speech will awaken a reader’s imagination. Often, these words and phrases inspire an understanding of a more difficult or abstract quality. They make these difficult ideas easier to comprehend.

Yet, the term figure of speech is still a broad term, covering several different types of literary devices. Examples of figure of speech include, but are not limited to: similes, metaphors, irony, puns, allusions, personification, hyperbole, synecdoche and metonymy.

When studying English, a student must have a working understanding of the most basic elements in figure of speech. Because these words and phrases have the power to increase understanding, a reader must first be able to identify their use. In this way, a reader will be able to fully interpret the meaning of the ideas behind the words.

The Bible contains many beautiful examples of figures of speech, moments where the ideas are bigger than the definitions of the words used to describe them. In the Bible, the use of figure of speech is exact and pointed. These words and phrases are not haphazard nor random.

Figure of speech is used to create a powerful point about a given subject. By employing figures of speech, the Bible offers a deeper understanding of complex ideas. Of course, determining the message delivered by these figures of speech will become a life-long study.

For our purposes, let’s look at the most common types of figure of speech: simile, metaphor, personification and synecdoche.

Simile
Simile is when two different things or ideas are compared because they share a quality or likeness. Similes are often easy to spot because they use a connective, words “like” or “as”.

Read Psalms 1:3. What simile did you find? Do you see the righteous man is compared to a healthy and fruitful tree? Did you see the connective word, like? This is an excellent example of simile.

Metaphor

Metaphor is similar to simile. When a metaphor is used a person, place, thing or idea is directly compared to another. In this way, the first object will be represented by many qualities possessed by the second. The tie between the two concepts is stronger and less likely to be explained further. The reader is expected to apply an understanding of the two concepts in order to understand the meaning. The easiest way to find a metaphor is to look for two ideas being compared. You will notice that in a metaphor the writer will not use the comparative words “like” or “as”.

Read Psalms 3:3. Who is being compared to a shield? Do you see that the comparison is direct? What qualities would a warrior expect in a shield? Those qualities should then be applied to the Lord.

Personification
Personification is the representation of an object or concept as a person. Often, these comparisons help the reader apply an easy to understand quality or actions to a more complex, abstract idea.

Read Proverbs chapter 8:1-3. What is the concept represented by the woman? Do you see that the woman represents understanding and wisdom? The idea of a woman calling out is an easier idea to think about than the abstract nature of wisdom and understanding.

Now that we understand synecdoche, let’s look more closely at Proverbs 1:15-16. What part of the body is being used to represent the whole body? What does the foot do for the body? How can this be considered the start of actions that must be avoided?

Project:
First, choose and read a few chapters of Psalms and Proverbs. As you read, you will notice several figures of speech. Write each scripture down and identify the type of figure of speech. Explain how the figure of speech helps a reader understand the message behind the words. Include five to ten examples of figurative language and their meaning.

Answers

We can see here that Psalm 42: 1, the simile seen is: "As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God." The believer that longs after God is compared to a deer in the desert longing for water.

What is figure of speech?

A figure of speech is a literary device or technique that enhances the meaning, impact, or beauty of language. It involves using words or expressions in a non-literal or imaginative way to create a specific effect. Figures of speech often involve comparisons, substitutions, or exaggerations to make language more vivid, expressive, or memorable.

In Proverbs 9: 1-3, " Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars: She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table. She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city,"

Personification is used here to give wisdom, an abstract object the ability to build.

Metaphor is used too as wisdom is referred to a woman.

Write a diary entry your parents gift you a bad puppy for your birthday make a diary entry writing about your surprise and excitement

Answers

Dear Diary,

What an incredible day it has been! I'm overflowing with surprise and excitement as I sit here to write about the unexpected gift I received for my birthday. I had no idea what awaited me when my parents handed me a small, wriggly package, adorned with a vibrant ribbon. As I eagerly tore through the wrapping paper, I couldn't help but wonder what was inside. The moment I saw those adorable eyes and fluffy fur, I knew my parents had given me the most incredible present: a new puppy!

Words cannot express the sheer astonishment that rushed through me when I first laid eyes on the tiny ball of energy. The excitement bubbled up within me, causing my heart to skip a beat. I could hardly believe that I now had a furry companion to share my days with. My mind raced with thoughts of all the adventures we would embark on together, the memories we would create, and the unconditional love that would undoubtedly fill our lives.

As I held the precious bundle of joy in my arms, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude towards my parents. They had truly outdone themselves with this surprise gift. I could see the gleam of happiness in their eyes as they watched me marvel at the puppy's cuteness. Their smiles mirrored my own, and in that moment, it became evident that they had chosen this gift with immense thought and consideration.

With every passing minute, my enthusiasm grew exponentially. I couldn't wait to introduce my new furry friend to the world, to show them off to my friends and extended family. I imagined the joyous looks on their faces as they met the newest member of our household. I could already envision the playdates, the walks in the park, and the endless games of fetch we would enjoy together. It was as if a world of possibilities had suddenly opened up before me.

The sudden responsibility of caring for a young puppy filled me with a mix of nervousness and determination. I knew that raising a dog would require patience, commitment, and a lot of effort, but I was prepared to take on the challenge with open arms. I started researching the best ways to train and care for a puppy, eager to learn all I could to ensure my new companion had the happiest and healthiest life possible.

As the days went by, I discovered the true meaning of companionship and unconditional love. My furry friend quickly became an integral part of my daily routine. From the moment we woke up to the time we went to bed, we were inseparable. Whether we were playing fetch in the backyard or cuddling up together on the couch, the bond between us grew stronger with each passing day.

I couldn't help but marvel at the way this little puppy had brought so much happiness into my life. Their wagging tail and slobbery kisses were like a balm for my soul, lifting my spirits even on the gloomiest of days. They taught me the value of living in the present moment, of finding joy in the simplest of things, and of cherishing the bonds we form with those we hold dear.

Looking back now, I realize that receiving this bad puppy was the best thing that could have happened to me. They may have been mischievous, causing a bit of chaos and mess around the house, but they also brought immense joy and laughter into our lives. My parents had given me a gift that would forever change the way I view the world—a furry companion who would be by my side through thick and thin, a constant source of love and comfort.

As I close this diary entry, I can't help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude. The surprise gift I received for my birthday was not just a puppy but a lifelong friend. The excitement I felt that day has turned into a deep-rooted love and a connection that words cannot adequately describe. I am truly blessed to have been given such a remarkable gift, and I am determined to cherish and care for my furry friend with all my heart.
