At the Earth’s Core
By: Edgar Rice Burroughs
1 “Let’s have a look beyond that door, David,” he cried.
2 Together we stepped out to stand in silent contemplation of a landscape at once weird and beautiful. Before us a low and level shore stretched down to a silent sea. As far as the eye could reach the surface of the water was dotted with countless tiny isles—some of towering, barren, granitic rock—others resplendent in gorgeous trappings of tropical vegetation, myriad starred with the magnificent splendor of vivid blooms.
3 Behind us rose a dark and forbidding wood of giant arborescent ferns intermingled with the commoner types of a primeval tropical forest. Huge creepers depended in great loops from tree to tree, dense under-brush overgrew a tangled mass of fallen trunks and branches. Upon the outer verge we could see the same splendid coloring of countless blossoms that glorified the islands, but within the dense shadows all seemed dark and gloomy as the grave.
4 And upon all the noonday sun poured its torrid rays out of a cloudless sky.
5 “Where on earth can we be?” I asked, turning to Perry.
6 For some moments the old man did not reply. He stood with bowed head, buried in deep thought. But at last he spoke.
7“David,” he said, “I am not so sure that we are ON earth.”
8 “What do you mean, Perry?” I cried. “Do you think that we are dead, and this is heaven?” He smiled, and turning, pointing to the nose of the prospector protruding from the ground at our backs.
9 “But for that, David, I might believe that we were indeed come to the country beyond the Styx. The prospector renders that theory untenable—it, certainly, could never have gone to heaven. However I am willing to concede that we actually maybe in another world from that which we have always known. If we are not ON earth, there is every reason to believe that we may be IN it.”

Read the sentence. After going over the attendance data, I have learned that twenty percent of our students are calling in sick every day, and it would be good to do something to stop this problem. Which appeal is the speaker using in the sentence?
Hey there!
There are three main types of appeal in a sentence. These are also known as modes of persuasion. They are logos, ethos, and pathos.
Logos is appealing to someone based on logic, facts, and statistics.
Ethos is appealing to someone based on one's credibility or experience when giving a statement. An example of using ethos could be quoting a psychologist's opinion on what causes depression in teens.
Pathos is appealing to someone based on emotions and feelings, usually in a sentimental or dramatic story.
In our situation, we see that the teacher uses a number: 20%. This makes it a statistic, so the appeal used is logos. This statistic can be used to back up that many people are calling in sick and that the problem needs to be solved.
Have a wonderful day!

Suddenly he became aware that something was wrong with the raft--and a few hundred yards ahead was a stretch of foaming rapids that would smash it to kindling wood. The woman stood leaning on the shaft of a broken sweep, watching the man. With unhurried but almost superhuman strength he was working the other sweep from the rear, aiming for the opposite bank.
The struggle seemed hopeless. Torrance read it at a glance, unaccustomed as he was to water. The tug of the rapids was drawing them swiftly downward in a course that was too slightly diagonal to its current to promise more than the faintest hope. The man seemed suddenly to grasp the extent of their peril, for his arms moved more quickly, the bow of the raft swinging about and pointing upstream; but still the current gripped them relentlessly.
The woman lifted her head and looked down along the whirling eddies to the froth of broken water. For a moment she stood, rigid, then turned to the horses, and from among them sprang a huge dog. Into its mouth she pressed the end of a rope, and it leaped far into the water.

compare and contrast the events at the beginning with the events at the end of the story
The events at the beginning of a story lay the groundwork for what is to come. The end, on the other hand, is the resolution or denouement, which ties up the loose ends and brings the story to a close. It’s important to compare and contrast these two stages of a story to gain a better understanding of how the story evolves and to gain insights into its themes, symbolism, and messages.
In literature, stories have a beginning, middle and end.
The beginning is the exposition, which sets the scene, introduces the characters, and provides the background information.
This is particularly true in the short story The Lottery by Shirley Jackson.
At the beginning of the story, the villagers are gathering in the town square for the annual lottery.
The children are playing and gathering rocks while the adults are talking and joking around.
There is an air of anticipation and excitement as they wait for the arrival of Mr. Summers, who is in charge of the lottery.
The tone is light and cheerful, and the atmosphere is festive.
At the end of the story, however, the mood has changed drastically.
The winner of the lottery is revealed, and the villagers converge on her, stones in hand, to stone her to death.
The tone is dark and ominous, and the atmosphere is tense and foreboding.
The villagers no longer seem like friendly neighbors but like a pack of wild animals.
They seem to take pleasure in the act of killing, and it’s clear that this is not the first time they have done this.
The contrast between the beginning and the end of the story is stark and unsettling, leaving the reader with a sense of horror and disbelief.
Overall, the events at the beginning and the end of the story are drastically different, and this contrast serves to highlight the themes of tradition, conformity, and the darker aspects of human nature.
The story shows how even in a seemingly idyllic community, violence and cruelty can lurk just beneath the surface, waiting to rear their ugly heads.

1. Describe in plain English the cases where a BST with n keys looks like an n-element doubly linked list. Make specific reference to the pointer structure. 2. Do insertion and deletion into these spe
When a Binary Search Tree (BST) with n keys looks like an n-element doubly linked list, it means that the BST is structured in a way that resembles a linear linked list rather than a balanced binary tree.
In this case, each node in the BST only has one child, either to the left or to the right.
To understand this visually, imagine a BST with n keys where each node has a left pointer, a right pointer, and a parent pointer. In a typical BST, the nodes would be arranged in a balanced manner, with the left child being smaller than the parent and the right child being larger. However, in the case of a BST that looks like a doubly linked list, each node will have either a left child or a right child, but not both. The pointers will essentially form a linear structure where you can traverse from one node to the next using either the left or right pointers.
Insertion and deletion into a BST that resembles a doubly linked list can be straightforward because the structure is linear. Here are the steps for insertion and deletion:
Insertion:
- To insert a new key into the BST, start from the root and compare the key with each node.
- If the key is smaller than the current node, move to the left child if it exists. If not, create a new node as the left child of the current node.
- If the key is larger than the current node, move to the right child if it exists. If not, create a new node as the right child of the current node.
- Repeat these steps until finding an appropriate position for the new key.

Organizational Structures are essential tools for effective
strategic management and healthy quality of work lif
Yes, I believe that honesty, transparency, and flattened organizational structures are essential tools for effective strategic management and a healthy quality of work life. In the first paragraph, I will discuss how honesty and transparency contribute to effective strategic management, and in the second paragraph, I will explain how flattened organizational structures can promote a healthy quality of work life.
Honesty and transparency are crucial components of effective strategic management. When managers are honest and transparent with their employees, they build trust and credibility. This can help to reduce stress and anxiety among employees because they feel more confident in their managers' ability to make good decisions and communicate effectively. Honesty and transparency can also help to prevent misunderstandings and conflict within the organization. For example, if a manager is open and honest about the reasons behind a particular decision, employees are less likely to feel resentful or suspicious.
Flattened organizational structures can promote a healthy quality of work life by creating a more collaborative and inclusive environment. In a flattened structure, there are fewer levels of management between the CEO and the frontline employees. This can help to create a sense of shared purpose and accountability throughout the organization. Employees are more likely to feel empowered and engaged when they have a direct line of communication with senior management. Additionally, flattened structures tend to be more flexible and adaptable to change. This can help to create a more dynamic and innovative work environment, which can be motivating and energizing for employees. Overall, I believe that honesty, transparency, and flattened organizational structures are essential tools for effective strategic management and a healthy quality of work life.
